Default Is it ok to bend the hangers on my exhaust?

I bought an Apex'i WS2 catback exhaust a while ago and it doesn't line up 100% under the car ('93 Si). The resonator is a little to far left, part of the "S" pipe is too far right and the muffler is slightly right. Even tho they are off a little, the muffler and resonator are ok, but the "S" pipe is hitting the frame, causing bad vibrations.

I was talking to a friend and he suggested just bending the metal hangers that are welded to the exhaust to correct the alignment. It seems like bending the hangers a bit would fix my problem, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't a stupid thing to do first. I'd rather not mess up my new exhaust because I didn't want to bring it to a shop.

Heat 'em up with a torch first!

i had to bend my resonator hanger up because it was hanging low and scraping on speed bumps. just heated it up and used some pliers to bend it.

Dumb question; should I make it red-hot, or do I just need to heat it up a bit?

Just enough to make it malleable, no need to over-heat it.

Question: What kinda heating instrument are you going to use? Portable propane torch or ?

I don't really know yet. Would a micro (butane) torch be good enough to get the job done? I might have to go out and buy something tomorrow.

I was thinking something along the lines of:

dont bend it!! you'll just end up stretching the rubber hangers, making it hit the chassis again. is your mid-pipe a 2piece? if so take off the first section that bolts on the cat and turn it and see if that helps.

The rubber hanger on the right side of the resonator is already stretched and the left one is kinda smushed against the frame. I'm trying to make it not stretch.

Would I be able to get away with using a micro butane torch or should I just go buy a propane one?

If you already have that torch, try it -- if not get a propane one, they don't cost much.

not trying to treat you stupid here, but are you sure the exhaust is installed correctly? ive seen s pipes put on backwards, and ive seen enough adjustment in the flange bolt holes to adjust exhausts to fit better. apexi stuff is usually dead on.

Aye. It is possible to install the "S" backwards and it won't be 100% on. Like JSPECSIR said try that first. Also. Since the exhaust is heavier and the stock hangers suck anyway get some hoseclamps and put around the hangar itself. It will help pull the exhaust back up so it doesn't hang so low.

I finally got a chance to work on the car and you were right. I had the 'S' pipe on backwards.

I loosened everything up, flipped the pipe and then tightened everything back up. The resonator still sits off to the left, smushing one of the hangers against the body a bit, but other then that it is great.

The ride is so much smoother and quieter now that I fixed that. Thanks for saying something before I went off bending the hangers, lol.

On a side note, I was tightening my alternator belt and I noticed a little bracket near the alt. I have no clue what it's for, so I took a few pics. Anyone know what that's for?
