And People Wonder Why Import Racers Have Such a Bad Rep
I just came across this article on CNN.com. I can't believe how stupid people are.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/01/....html
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/01/....html
Everyone that races in the domestic world around here really likes the import stuff. If we go to a Summit ET Series event to test, they stop all the racing just to let us make a pass because everyone is so interested in it. I will have a line of 40 kids wanting to sit in the car and all their parents asking questions about it..... so I'd say in general we have a good rep. Not like years ago.

Chad, you're kidding right? I didn't think I'd ever see the day that one of us would condemn the rest of us, for doing something that our grandfathers did. This has been going on since the beginning of cars period. Street racing is stupid period and has been for almost 100 years

As they say, racing was born the day the second car was made.
These "street racers" make me laugh though. If you've got enough money to build a 10 second car, you've got enough money to pay $15 to race it at the track on Friday night.

Yes of course I was kidding. Sorry I should have made it more clear in my reply to Nate.
Back in the day one of my best friends along with his g/f and other friend was killed on his way home b/c of two cars street racing. His car was hit head on and everyone in the car burned to death. I am very much against street racing and I am a member of RASR. It just amazes me how dumb people can be like this kid in the article that decided to race down a hill b/c his first gear did not work. That is why I said what I did to Nate.

I don't usually post on these things because there's far too many of these stories in the news, but I feel like typing so here goes. Its long so if you're lazy, here's the summary: Street racing sucks but it's not going away.
First and foremost: Street racing is dumb. Like Clayton said; it's been around and it will be around. People are competitive by nature. Everyone in this forum knows how good it feels to win and how bad it feels to lose: it's part of why you drag race, paint your car in a trailer when it's 15 below outside and wave your fist at bureaucratic organizations for taking way too long with behind-door processes that keep you from doing what you love.
Let's take a quick 5-question survey:
1) How long does it take you guys to drive to your local track? 10 minutes? An hour? 3? 6+?
2) How much does it cost to race on a test n' tune night? $10? $15? $35?
3) Do you prefer to be at the track alone, with one or two people as supporting staff or do you want the entire group of friends/family/haters out there?
4) Do you enjoy gambling? Doesn't have to be for a lot of money, or even money at all.
5) If you didn't have sponsors or even points to win in a series, would you still try hard as you can to win?
On a different point, some tracks host events that they try to make just like the street racing experience.. complete with flagging by a person, gambling, huge crowds on and around the track and trash-talking... the only difference between it and real street racing is of course, you're at a track and it's legal. Ever been to one of these? It's like 20-25 bucks to enter but I can't tell you how many times grown men are yelling at one another over who's giving who how much advantage over in a race on which they bet... wait for it.... $20! I imagine my local track is no different from any other: import guys get stigmatized on the whole and if one car breaks on the line or it's a grudge match race or whatever other reason for delay, it takes like 40 minutes to get everyone away from the start line.
One thing I've also noticed is there's this in-group solipsism in the mindset of track racers (that being the people who post on this forum) that everyone is able to get to the track, to race on it and to stay off the street. Reality is, if you just ask around or find that thread about how much a SFWD car costs from start to finish, the average street racer is the kid that's in that story from CNN. Just racing his friend just to see who's faster. Not real likely to drive however long it takes to drive to HIS LOCAL track, pay the entry fee, sit through tech, sit in staging, wait for the broken cars to get cleared off, etc. People love instant results, especially if challenged by someone close to them. If some dude is spitting game to your girl or steals from you or challenges you to a fight... you're not going to give him the card of your local gym with a boxing ring and tell him to show up next week. Either it's going down right then and there or you resolve the conflict in a non-violent manner. Those of you who remember, I think it was the 2006 season, where sportsman racers at some track (Pomona rings a bell) didn't even get to make passes or something like that and they were furious and said it sucked and yada yada. Keep in mind, these are people who are used to the due processes of a track and know it takes a long time, and even they became furious with the mistreatment. Some kid who just wants to prove his car is faster is certainly not going to have the desire to go through all the various steps just to race his buddy... supposing his first gear even worked. LOL!

Street racing is huge in my area and the main reason for that is they closed the local track and now the closest one is 3.5 hours away......its something that has been around before all of us and will be here long after us I guess the only thing that can be done is not jump on the bandwagon just because you finished up your new setup and take the time out of your weekend to travel to the track
i have been to jail over that BS and i dont think it should take that or killing/hurting someone to convince you its not safe. i actually gave up the honda scene for a while and sold my eg coupe w/ an ls swap to my cousin in east texas. he was into drugs and it was stolen from his buddies twice for money for drugs. my uncle sold it to a kid in the dallas area and what do you know he starts spraying and street racing....he and a family of 6 was in the dallas news about how he hit a van head on and killed them all. If the track in your area is closed you need to press the issue of how important it is to have it open. petition it and stay on the PD's *** about getting something together. If you can't i would def take a trip of 3 hrs to race safely and legally
It takes a serious incident before most will stop street racing. Most folks I know that race sanctioned events and are local to the track still street race. It's practically a culture. Like skateboarders skating in prohibited areas instead of the skate park. I personally don't street race anymore because I can't afford to lose my license, lose my job, injure myself or others, etc. but nowadays, most verteran street racers would rather do it at the track unless the track is unaccessable and they're very discreet about it. The last thing they want is a huge audience to attract ruckus.
Is it just me or does anyone agree that you hardly ever see cars that are tuned, modded, fixed up, or have any real performance at all in these illegal street racing car crashes?
Most (not all of the time) of the time its just a bunch of dumb F(*&()) kids who don't understand the limits of their hunk of s(&^.
And so the article states (we can't stop the random races) so lets target people that are in the middle of nowhere that get together and race.
Don't you think that the effort would be better spent on patroling or detectives that might actually catch people who steal s(*&. (ie. cars)

Check out the guys from the Gumball...some of those guys have been to racing school and have comp licences. Performance cars? Ferrairs, GT3's, CGT and so on... and some of these guys have gone off the road just as bad as the lower performance, lesser drivers. It doesnt matter how good you think you are or how tuned, modified your car is. If you streetrace ANYTHING can go wrong. On the track you have nice pretty walls to keep you from killing anyone. and you have the good feeling of having safety personal nearby to pull you out if you get into a bad one.

the funny thing is, 80% of the above people, street race, they are just trying to sound spiffy.
I personally dont have a problem with organized street racing. People just dont use common sense and dont do it safely.

You know the funny thing is that u reference the gumball drivers, their licences, and their cars, and ask why anyone would want to race on the street.
Well why are they? They still do both.
I'm not stating that it can't happen to the best of us. I'm just saying you don't hear of some b20 EK smashing into a family as much as you hear two random *** kids in lame as POS doing it.
But because a bunch of people get all upset when it does happen on some street it shouldn't have they come to the streets that no one except racers are on and want to make an example.
