Cheap paint to use to practice the technique
I have been making some posts about buying a gun and compressor, but I want to get my technique down before buying expensive paint.
can I use home depot rustoleum paint in the gun to practice, and eventually get better paint when I want to paint some parts?
or if there is any generic paint to try n use, ive seen some generic base coat colors in a can at pep boys?
any ideas?

Just go to a local auto/hardware store and pick up some cheap paint to practice with. Right now Im practicing with some dupli-color high heat paint, and have a cheap gun and it still works for teaching myself. What do you intend to practice on?

worthless.
if all you going to shoot is everyting other than the "real" car paint, what is the point of practicing? just ask for some bad mix or expired/old/leftover paint, you can usually get them very cheap.
don't waste your gun shooting crap homedepot fish oil with thick **** viscosity.
the best thing to shoot on is old body piece, fender, hood, door from bone yard.
or your neighbor's new AMG

^^^ I agree, you want to get something cheap, yet descent and similar to the good stuff. Try some of the budget auto paint lines. Call around and persuade a shop or supplier to hook you up with some cheap left overs or anything thats not so pricey.

Whats the problem with using cheap paint to practice on parts that I'll never use, or just random things to learn a technique?

it's about gun handle, air flow, spray pattern, viscosity of paint, how you going to learn tennis without playing tennis? what are you saying is that you can learn tennis better by playing tennis with a badminton bird.
sure they both involves similar thing, but is it the same?
cheap paint from home depot=/= real car paint period.

im very new to painting.. but i agree..
why tune a engine on pump gas, when you know you want to run it on race gas? doesn't make sense.
left overs is your best bet, or even the cheapest line of auto paint, and spray junk laying around. doesn't matter what it is, a old mirror, or a trash can lid... you want to practice shooting what your going to be using.

amen, you only get to learn by doing it.
leftover paint or old bad paint doesn't worth a damn to the jobber, you can get a gallon of bad mix for 30 buck, you can paint a small car wtih that much paint
