I got the same problem with mines. I bought a 90 crx so put into my 88 hatch thought it was plug play nope need wiring so go to ef thread and on search you will seek and find even though I havnt done the wiring but I still have it waiting
Well your car is........a 90....
so you need a 90-91 cluster....
not a 88-89
wirings different...
and if you knew that already...
then if you look farther into the ef/crx thread you will find the diagrams for the wiring pinout points.
Other than that, bump for why mine doesn't work....

basically.........
i just wanna know if the cluster it self is the problem......
or do i need to plug something into that blue clip in the middle

If I remember correctly, there are two different types of clusters for the 88-89's... One with that blue plug and one without. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but go ahead and do some searching
hmm after 7 pages of the ef/crx forum, no one even mentioned that theres two types.
Is Mr. Hatch correct?
Thus, I should grab one without the blue plug?
Bump for an answer in less than 5 hours
