compression ratio and smog
i got a crx si and im in the process of rebuilding a usdm b18c1 motor. my question is how much compression can i have and still be able to BAR my crx? ill also be running skunk2 IM if that some how matters. my plan was to run usdm itr pistons and after its smogged some s2 pro 1's or bc specIV's . thanx for any input!
I highly doubt your going to get it BAR'd with the skunk 2 IM. Not that it couldn't pass smog but they will be looking for any aftermarket parts. Anything even a different color hose will cause you to fail visual inspection. Regardless if it has anything to do with smog.
The ref i had to go to was an idiot. The first time i took the car there he was looking at pictures and pointed at the intake (with the PGM-FI) and said "you see it needs to look like this one" (OBD1) manifold and i was like "are you serious, your looking at pictures to decide if i'm going to pass".
So basicly 3 trips later (bad cat) after i had converted to OBD1 and got a P30 ecu i got my sticker.
Hope that helped.

well from what i know the skunk2 im is carb legal so the ref can suck my nutz, correct me if im wrong. people pass jdm gsr's which are 10.6:1 and according to cspeeds compression calculator i should be at 10.8:1 with usdm itr pistons. i was just hoping to find some wth a similar set up thanx for the replies guys!
If you're below 11:1, you shouldn't have too much of a problem with a sniffer. Keep in mind that as you increase your dynamic compression ratio, you increase the emission of nitrogen oxides. You might want to retard your ignition timing before the test in order to reduce peak cylinder pressure (and heat).

Wrong, the skunk2 carb number doesn't work, when it is run through the computer database it comes up as skunk2 cams, not an IM so that is an automatic fail. Also, the ref will go by a hose diagram for stock oem gsr IM, when he/she sees all the emission hoses in the wrong places and the IAB not hooked up, that's another fail. If you do try to bar a gsr motor in a crx, you need to keep the stock gsr IM on there with all the hoses hooked up correctly. I passed state ref. in my gsr with 81.5mm ITR pistons, flat faced valves and BC3 cams but I had to put my stock gsr IM back on cause I failed visual test cause of the skunk2 IM.

hey thanx alot guys!! yea from what i here the skunk2 im is a hit or mis when u bar it. this guy did his with a skunk2 im http://www.norcalcrx.org/dropp...p.htm

To be honest if you ask 10 different people your most likely going to get 10 different answers. From what I can gather it looks like each ref does what he can based on what he knows. I'm in the process of doing my 98 EK right now and I can get different answers about the same thing every week.
Case in point. I've been running a Skunk 2 jumper harness for 3 tests and some new **** is there on the 4th time around and says "thats a failing visual point". I asked "so how did i pass the otner 3 times then?" Long story short I must be Houidi or something. So i had to re-pin the connectors.
All u can do is start the process. Make sure u start before you really need it smogged and plan to do it a few times.
