Video from GT Live at VIR
Finally got around to putting together a little video of my Time Attack/Road Race EG Civic in action from the GT Live/Redline Time Attack at VIR back in October. Had tons of fun at this amazing track and got beat by Kevin Helms by a few tenths, keeping my streak of being fastest in practice but not quite fast enough in the finals alive at this event
Haha...ah well, enjoy and hope to see y'all there again this year!

If the link doesn't work, I also posted the vid up on the modified homepage...www.modified.com
If you've never been, try to check out a GT Live event...they're tons of fun, what with the KONI Challenge, drift, time attack, and stunt bike guys all coming together for a weekend of fun at the track. And of course the Redline guys always do a top notch job too!

Thanks Pat. Motor is a K24A2 out of a TSX, stock block, Skunk2 Stage 3 cams, exh cam gear and valve springs and retainers, DC header, shorty intake, Vibrant 3'' exhaust. Made 245whp on a Dynojet. With the built bottom end we were running before (12.5:1 Ross pistons, IB Spec rods, and lightened crank) we made 280whp with the same head package, but we melted a piston before VIR so swapped in the stock block for this event. Going to build another high compression block and maybe pick up some ITB's and a better header and see where that gets me
C-West front and rear bumpers...haven't put the sides on yet since they make it tough to get the car on/off the trailer and cover the OE jack tabs. Will figure that out over the winter since the sides should help the aero a bit.

Damn, talk about pansy-*** in the convertible classic Camaro or whatever that was. I've never seen that much braking in the uphill esses.

i don't think that car was ever right all weekend.when it wasn't sitting, broken on the side of the track,it was smoking heavily and going pretty slow.

Very nice video and great driving. If its ok id like to ask some questions...
do you need some sort of racing licence to compete at these events. Ive been wanting to get my CRX on the track for quite a while but cant seem to find some good information on how to do it.
Thanks.

the GT Live event didn't require any kind of license or anything else to compete, although that shouldn't be your first track time.....i beleive there's a thread at the top of this forum on how to get started.

You do not need to have a racing license to participate, but you do need to have suitable on track experience. Every participant that is new to one of our Time Attack events will be required to provide us with a list of their experience, what groups they have run with, any racing experience they have, etc.. and we will verify the information with the other organizations and sanctioning bodies. This is in everyone's best interest to ensure the events we run are as safe as they can be.

Thanks, yea GT Live wouldnt be my first track day. Ive done HPDE and some events with Chin motorsports. I just want to get into some wheel to wheel kinda driving.

Time attack is not wheel to wheel. To go wheel to wheel you do need a comp licence. Time attacks are like a very fast group 3 or 4. You are not racing the car next you are racing the clock.

It is important to emphasis that Time Attack is not door-to-door racing, nor is it intended to be. In my video, I showed quite a few clips of passing slower moving cars, which may have given some the notion that there's passing for position or racing going on, but that's not the case. Those passes were all done during practice, where it's essentially an open lapping environment with controlled passing, meaning point-by passes indicated by the lead car or at least passing limited to straight aways where it's safest. My apologies if the video is deceiving...I was just trying to make it entertaining. Really what Time Attack is all about is maximizing car and driver for sheer speed, without having to worry about passing slower cars. That's why during the actually Time Attack lap that's featured at the end of the video, you don't see any passing. GT Live and Redline space the cars out during the official Time Attack sessions, so that no passing is required. This way, it's just you and your car against the clock, which is a very pure form of competition when you think about it, much like downhill skiing or the 100m sprint. It's all about who can set up their car the best and get the most out of it from behind the wheel.
Nik, hope to see you guys too!

Thanks for the good info. I was looking at the Redline Time Attack homepage for information and I noticed that there is a Street Class. This class is basicly stock or lightly modified cars. Since you have been at the these events have you noticed a good crowd of the Street Class? Because from looking at your video, most of the cars seem to be highly modified and not driven on the street.

The GT Live event only had the Modified and Unlimited class cars out on the big track, but on the Patriot track (smaller, more technical track at VIR) they did run a Street Class competition as well. This is a bit of an unusual scenario, since regular Redline events have the Street class competitors on the same track as everyone else. GT Live's philosophy has been to try to attract "professional" time attack teams/cars with a focus on Unlimited class machines, but regular Redline TA events have big and very competitive Street classes. I think the Street classes are a great place to learn your craft and perfect your car's setup, and then once your budget allows think about moving up to Modified or Unlimited class when you're ready for stickier tires and more power, lighter weight, better aero, etc. Really, it's just a matter of how fast do you want to go and how much do you want to spend
You can have just as much fun in Street class in a mildly but intelligently prepped car than I have in my stupidly expensive Unlimited class EG. It's fun having a fast FWD car, but it ain't what I'd call cheap fun. And realistically, you'll learn more as a driver if you focus on going as fast as you possibly can in a slow car. Best training you'll ever get. I spent a lot of years in D-series powered Civics and CRX's learning to maintain every bit of momentum I could, which helps me a lot to this day.

I guess they put the Street Class on a different course so there wouldnt be any traffic jams?? This Street Class seems to be my next move. The HPDE are good and fun but are very very expensive compared to the entry fees for the GT Live events. Also I think I like the idea of driving fast and trying to set a time better than just driving fast alone. Im going to research the rule book and see if my car is up to par for the Street Class.
The Street Class competition on the Patriot Course was TONS OF FUN! It was very competitive. I had a chance to drive a well modified Ford Focus (200whp, LSD, Gears, suspension, etc) and had an absolute blast driving around the course. But don't have the wrong impression about the Street Class cars or competitors. The cars are well modified (within reason) and the drivers take it very seriously. I expect the turnout for Street Class to double for this year's event.
