Im in chicago, wheres it 0 degrees right now

i have a 91 civic sedan lx 5 speed

the car starts, but wont stay on. it only stays on when i keep the key turned.

i did some searches, and came to the conclusion that the ignitions electrical assembly has gone bad....correct me if i am wrong

can you confirm that this is an ignition switch issue? or could it be a main relay?

My dad's civic dx relay switch had corrosion buildup and the contacts were corroded like heck. Seemed like water got in, Because nearly half the relay box was filled with condensation.

No.

Definitely sounds like the ignition switch based on what you described (mainly having to hold the key on). A bad main relay behaves differently (typically the car cranks but won't start in hot weather).

Alright well I might as well check both.

But yeah the car starts up like a champ, idles fine, everything is good.

I let go of the key and it dies instantly.

Yep that's the switch. I had to replace my swtich because the previous owner splice it to power the radio.

Not hard, remove the steering covers, then remove the bolts screws then unplug the harness and your done. Then install the new one
