Default Painting engine bay first

Since I don't have endless amount of money I'll have to paint my engine bay first with the shell I purchase as a project. After I get the motor swap built and looking all nice I'll probably spend all of my money/budget. Now later on if I do decide to paint the exterior is it hard to keep paint dust from getting in the engine bay? I'll probably wont' be able to fund a exterior paint job for another year and by that time the engine should be looking very detailed and nice.

Has anyone encounter paint dust or residue sticking in there even if you mask things off good. There is a lot of open space under neath the car that paint can get into that I'm worried about. I'm taking my car to a guy to do it in his garage. I've seen his work on exterior but I'm worried that he will mess up the engine bay afterwards.

thanks.

As long as he can mask/prep really good and completely seals the bay while masking, it will be fine. I would use a combination of masking plastic and paper. The masking plastic can cover large, multi-shape area like the undercarriage into the wheel wells and where ever else you need to mask. Just tell him what you want and go from there. If the hood has to be cut in, I would paint the hood and the bumper off the car, so that would be less spraying around the front end also, just an option.

Thanks, I'm just worried that there will be paint residue going through somewhere. Do anybody paint engine bay first and then later paint the exterior have any issue with this? I mean getting paint residue not just in the engine bay but on the motor and anything inside of it.

usually you pull the motor out when you paint the engine bay... dont see how you will get paint inside your motor either...

you should be fine

Yes I got a bare shell, so I'm painting the engine bay first, then maybe a year later the exterior. I'm not saying paint will get in the motor, just on the exterior.

I only ask this because few years ago my cousin painted his drag civic. Interior was stripped bare and painted and looking very nice. The exterior we found some defects and sent it back to the paint shop. After they fixed the exterior the interior was all rough and seemed to have whole bunch of extra paint dust or whatever it is on it. So that is why I'm worried that is all, I'm not too knowledgeable on painting.
