Timing on GS-R
Here's the deal, i have a 00 gsr in a 95 gsr... for some reason i think the timings off, when i set it in the middle which is suppoesed to be stock on the dizzy, it runs real sluggish, and it has a bad sputter when taking off and regular driving through all gears, if i advance it, it runs perfect, ill get that sputter once or twice the hole time i drive it, it does have new plugs, rotor cap, wires fuel filter everything is perfect, when i first got the car the timing was off, i did bring it up to tdc and aligned everything with that, the reason i want to retard is cuz im running a 75 shot of wet nitrous, and i dont want nuttin to happen to it, i havent checked but are the timing marks the same on the unorthodox pulley, cuz thats what it has, i havent checked though, if so wutz the stock timing supposed to be at. so i can put it there and retard 2 degrees for the n20. thanks
The B18C1 base timing should be set to 16* BTDC.
Your aftermarket pulley might have the mark only at 0*, in which case you will need an adjustable timing light.

ok the timing light i have is the one that u connect to cylinger one wire, the power and point the light, im guessing thats not the one right??
nope, thats a normal timing light. http://www.jcwhitney.com/webap...10101
or, you can put the stock pulley back on, or you can mark the stock pulley at 16* BTDC.
Look on the pulley and see if it has a mark at TDC, or a mark after.

Don't forget, to retard the timing would be to subtract from TDC, so you're looking for 18* BTDC. You will notice some power loss during normal driving.
Retard it too far and your car will run like crap. It's always better to go with controlled timing, as opposed to retarding the base.

since i dont have access to either, how can i go about checking it, i dont want to spray and my timing be off (advanced) and my motor blows... any information would be great.. or is the adjustable timing light my best bet

Sorry, I meant aftermarket there.
If you can put your car at TDC on #1, look for the timing mark. Either it lines up (0*) or the mark is not there yet (16* hopefully). You also need to jump the service connector when setting the timing. Timing is not something that you guess at, be careful.
You should get your shop manual from here: http://www.hondahookup.com

sorry bro, wut do u mean jump the service connector, i turn the pulley till im at tdc, and look for timing mark right, and im pretty sure all this is done with car off right, wutever its at, i mark it like for example wit a marker and it should be at 0*
still need some info, i tried checking the timing last night and couldnt seem to find the timing marks on the unorthodox pulley, can someone help me and maybe show me pics wut its supposed to look like, i really need to retard my timing so i can start sprayin safely, i dont want it to blow.... YET lol any info would be greatly appreciated thanks to all

correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure that if you advance timing, you would be going towards 18* BTDC and to retard timing you would be going towards 14* BTDC. because the spark is before TDC, to advance it you would be going further from TDC which means going towards 18*. sorry if that was redundant.

maybe this might help you out on how to check the ignition timing.

Yeah, you're right.
Reverse what I said there, 14* is 2* retarded.

ok i found the mark on the pulley, i set it to stock timing, and marked it, now another question, im gettin ready to put my nitrous kit on, how do i know when the timing is 2* retarded, i kknow which way to turn the dizzy and everything and i can see the mark on the pulley moving, and the idle goes down, but how do i know its at 2* for when i do spray... thanks
did you set the timing according to the link i posted? if you did, then when you want to retard it, you should use an adjustable timing light, or if you just want to guess at it, use the regular timing light and retard it until the mark on the pulley is 1-2 mm to the left of the mark on the cam cover. but if youre still not sure, you should search in the archives for timing cause theres a lot of good threads in there.
have one more question, when i do set it to stock timing or when i allign both marks on pulley and lower cover, and im driving with a/c on, it bogs pretty bad, through all gears, anyone know why it would do this??
