What more info do you want? Basically everything you need to know is on the website http://www.24hoursoflemons.com Be sure to read the rules carefully. Especially regarding the following:
1) Price: Some people cheat, but there are ways to make life miserable for those who get caught cheating (or even if you bring a car which looks too nice or is just plain old too fast). I noticed you were looking for an ITR shell as your base. As that would make a good car putting it together for $500 would be difficult. I don't see how you could get a shell (crashed or not) and then an engine / trans for under $500 unless you're getting hooked up - which is not allowed.
2) Safety: They have been pretty lax about enforcing the cage rules, but the event is getting more popular and they are going to start being more strict about this type of thing (well, all of the rules).
I participated in the AMP race this past October, it was amazing. So much fun! I would definitely recommend it to everyone. Just remember that this race is not about winning, its about having a good time. The organizers want the participants to bring more to the table than just a desire to win. This is why the teams have funny names, themes and people often wear costumes. Really the race is 1 part endurance race and 1 part circus.
Here's a snap of our car before all the carnage:

We will be returning this year, hopefully with an engine that will last more than 8hrs!
