Most likely, the stock remote you have is for keyless entry. There was an alarm option from the factory, but most people didn't get it because it's cheaper to get an aftermarket alarm. As far as opening the trunk remotely, you'd probably need to get an aftermarket alarm and have an actuator installed to do so. I'm not sure how to do it myself, but nowadays anything is possible.

If you have the alarm it should be under the seat IIRC. The factory keyless just unlocks and locks the doors (and you can press and hold the option button to make it beep when you lock and unlock it).

For the '96-'98 models, the keyless is on the stock headunit. So if you remove it, it will no longer work.

There's nothing connected to the trunk and no actuator back there, so no, the keyless entry won't open it.
