Seating - Autox primarily, track days possibly, street occasionally
For you guys that upgrade the seating - when running a roll bar, do you run:
1. fixed back driver and pass seats
2. both adjustible
3. mixed (fixed driver, adj pass)?
I know in driving schools, the ideal is that you would have the same seat for the instructor as you have for the driver, but I've seen various combinations.

as long as both seats have provisions for the same harness set up - 5 point - any advantage other than weight to doing only fixed backs?

Oh yes, I most definately agree.
okay here is my situation - i currently have 1 fixed back seat and 1 sparco adjustable.
+
1 very easily rebuildable 89 civic I will use as an autox/etc car - not a DD.
I was originally debating keeping the interior, cleaning it up a little and just throwing in a harness bar and fixed back for AX days but pulling them out for street of course
OR
gutting the civic and using both seats (fixed driver/adj pass) or matching (getting pair) either fixed or adjustable with a proper rollbar and harness bar.
I'll be driving it to events and just am doing this for fun not for serious comp ie open track days, etc.

I run a fixed back recaro spg pro racer with a roll bar and 5 pt harness. For my passenger i run a stock gsr cloth seat with stock seatbelt.
Okay, I think I'm leaning toward gutting and running the adj sparco pass and the fixed back driver with rollbar and harnesses.
no point in keeping the rear seat with a rollbar.

If you're tracking that car, I bet your instructor hates you.

you don't need a rollbar if you are just autocrossing the car.
no real need for a harness or harness bar either.
a properly designed fixed back seat and stock seat belt will keep you from moving around at all. not to mention they will be much lighter then any adjustable back seat. the cheap Sparco, momo, etc, Adjustable seats weigh a ton.
look into a Momo Start fiberglass seat. light and comfortable.
not sure how safe they are, but i've seen a few people autocross that will use 5 point seatbelts and attach them at the rear seatbelt mounting point.
if you are tracking it, rollbar would probably be a good choice. no reason to run adjustable back seats with a roll bar. it's just more weight, and with the crossbar in the rollbar you aren't going to be able to pimp lean the seats back much. upright driving position is going to be much better for track/autox use anyway.

Isn't there a rule for equal protection for driver and passenger. Basically if you have fixed back on drivers side you need fixed back for passenger side.
Yeah, but not in autox. And honestly, I'm mostly happy with a harness and stock seat if the driver has a harness and whatever seat. Stock seat + stock seatbelt = no damn good though. And still, the BEST would be to have a harness and fixed-back seat, but I know money is tight for a lot of guys.

No. Not in NASA HPDE.

Lightweight fixed back seats for both sides is the only way I like to go.
1. Passenger seat should be placed for weight distribution F/R... I know where I want the weight to be and don't want a passenger moving it forward or back and changing the handling.
2. Reclining seats are too high unless you are a midget. You can't get low enough to be in a proper driving position with a seat bottom sitting some 4"-6" off the floor. It feels like you are truely integrated as part of the car with a properly positioned fixed seat. You never get that feeling with a reclining seat...
3. Proper fixed seats totally secure you in and allow you to concentrate on driving rather than trying to use your legs and arms as bracing to keep from moving around as you do in a reclining seat (even when using a 4-point harness).
4. Fixed seats are lightweight... 8lbs for a Kirkey LW (and ~16lbs for a fiberglass seat) verses 30lbs+ for a lightweight reclining seat (and ~40lbs for an average reclining seat).

few of my friends have the MOMO Start fiberglass seats. i'm a bit to large for them, but as i fabricated brackets for them all, i can say the Momo's are built well and are very light.
hard to beat $350 shipped for an FIA approved seat.
if you can find the 2006 model, they only weight 12 lbs. the 2007-up models supposedly weight 18 lbs.

I does help - everyone has been giving some really good input. I'm def not spending for JDM look at me recaro whatever's - something functional and comfortable.
But it does come back to if I will be running more than Auto X and if I'll be running a rollbar.

i love my spoon seat, it's not as tide as the bride i owned before. it still hold a bit and has a better leg position.( with the bride zeta, i can't move my leg) And it's easier to get in and out.
i run a stock passenger seat. nothing wrong i just don't want any of my passenger complain about can't get in and out of the car
