Default d15b2 camshaft oil seals?

I can't find a diagram or instructions for checking/replacing camshaft seals on my '90 d15b2. Do I have to take the whole camshaft out to just check em? Can I just take the tops off at each end and check em that way? A diagram or something would be nice!

Thanks, Joe

You should be able to visually inspect the seal by removing the top timing belt cover. You'll be able to see it through the cam gear and see if there are any leaks. To replace it, you don't need to remove the camshaft, just the #1 cam cap. There is no seal on the other end, the distributor goes there (but there is an O Ring that goes on the distributor so if it's leaking on that end, then replace that).

THANKS!

Is this just a seal I am looking for, or is it part of a bearing set? I guess I will find out when I pull the cam cap off.

I wrote to the company I bought the rebuilt cylinder head from, asking about all the loose bolts on the camshaft, which I just HAPPENED to notice when I was installing it, and asked if whoever didn't torque those bolts also left out the timing side cam seal. Answer: "The cam seal between the cam and the timing sprocket was not installed."

So, I wrote and asked about valve guides and seals. Well hell, I was wondering just what exactly I paid for. Answer: "Yes of course, it is a fully rebuilt head."

Sigh.

I guess I assume too much. Having never replaced a cylinder head, I assumed a "fully rebuilt cylinder head, ready to bolt on" would be just that. I'm glad I bought the whole gasket set. If I don't have a new gasket, I suppose I can pull the old one off my old head, which I still have. Old is better than nothing, and this thing goes through a lot of oil.

A new cam seal at the dealer is very cheap. No bearings are involved, the cam caps and head have an integrated bearing design. Down side is if they are ever severely damaged, the head is pretty much ruined. The cam seal itself is a hard rubber/plastic type material with the area where the camshaft protrudes being thin and flexible. I usually just cake hondabond around the seal itself where it contacts the head/cam cap#1.

Did you ever install the timing side cam seal? You must remove the sprocket and install the seal. Just buy a new one from honda it is not very expensive. Use some oil on the seal to help it slide into place.

As for the other side, you can just remove the last cap since that is the first to be removed in sequence anyway.
