Default Identifying by B16A... Please help!

Im getting a JDM B16A and im trying to figure out what it came out of. is there a way to check if its a 1st, 2nd or 3rd gen? i dont want to be stuck with a 1st gen when i paid for the 2nd. you never know what your going to get.

I seen head codes for the d series in the FAQ's. is there one for the b series?

Yes there is a year stamped on the cylinder head above the exhaust ports on the B16A head. It looks like a 9/? with the "?" being the the other part of the year.

Example? If the engine was manufactured in 92 the stamp wpuld look like 9/2, etc. etc.

The thing is that sometimes a year stamp or 9/1 means the engine was made in 1991, but is actually still a "1992" model engine, or "second-gen" engine.

If the stamp says 8/9 no doubt it's a first-gen, but if it's 9/0 it gets tricky because it could be first or secnd gen because in Japan their 1991 model was an EG, and OBD1 "second-gen."

You can also ID the engine by it's injectors and the grey distributor plugs.

I'll find a pic of the head stamp code.

This is from my 1988 D16A6 head, but the exact same type stamp is used on the B series as well - it's the one on the right in the pic:

Another way to spot a 1st gen is if it reads PGM-FI on the intake manifold like so...

2nd Gen and on will just have a couple of lines like so...

^Why would anyone want to base where an engine came out of on a part that is removed by 3 bolts? Its far too easy and far to common of an item to replace.

As stated, the best way is by the year that is stamped onto the head. "( 9 | x )"
The year alone is good enough to tell you the chassis, if it is usdm.
