Default CARB legal parts. ( California )

Hey guys im new to modifying cars and i have a few questions about california laws.

AEM makes CARB legal intakes, DC makes CARB legal headers. What is the difference between say a DC header and a TODA header? Why is one legal and one isnt? And why is it ok to run any kind of exhaust? (as long as it has a cat and isnt to loud 95db i believe)

Oh and also if you get pulled over and they see a TODA header, dont they send you to the State REF? Cant you just swap out the Illegal one for the stock one before you go?

Thanks in advance

The real difference / Cliff's is that the TODA header was not sent in by TODA to CARB for approval. The DC one was. DC paid for it too of course and that is why the DC is probably priced higher also.

I was pulled over last year for "suspicious driving" becuase I was doing 30 in a 45 (I was speeding up from a big *** dip in the road) and I had a generic eBay header/intake on my car. The cop said, even though I had passed smog with those parts, it was illegal. (Which I knew, just tried to get away with it ) I had to put the stock parts on and take it to a smog ref. He was real cool about everything, I was expecting him to be extremely **** about anything done to my car. Just be careful

So you can pay more for the carb legal parts now, and not worry about paying more (tickets) later?

Is there a difference between performace gains between CARB legal parts and the approved ones?
Will a DC header net as much horsepower as a TODA or Bisimoto header?

Carb legal parts don't take away or add performance or horsepower

It's all in the design of the header and air flow and diameter of piping

There is one other important difference between a CARB legal header and a non-CARB legal header. A CARB legal header MUST be able to bolt to the STOCK cat in the STOCK location WITHOUT modification. This is the reason why, for instance, ALL DC headers are CARB approved EXCEPT for the DC JDM 4-1. That header was made to bolt to a 2.5 inch cat. And the stock cat on the USDM ITR is only a 2 inch. Modification ad/or an aftermarket cat wouldbe required to make it fit. Therefore, the DC JDM 4-1 is NOT CARB legal. The same goes for ANY other header that bolts to a 2.5 inch cat, OR long-tube headers that would require that the cat be pushed back a few inches. In the end, as with SO many other things smog-related, it has little to nothing to do with emissions. True, if it won't bolt to a stock cat, you might be tempted to ditch the cat altogether. BUT, it's not like people with even bone-stock exhaust manifolds NEVER ditch their cats.

Or just get a sticker shop to make a carb sticker for the ebay intake and just buy a beat up smashed dc header on ebay for $30 or so and weld the carb tag off of it to your header of choice

I was about to do that with my header. I have the top piece to a B-series DC header and was just going to take the plates off but I didn't have the time... so maybe when I get back home I will do it

HAHA guys im in this exact dilemma. i have a da, and im stressin about whether i should go through the trouble to buy carb legal parts, or just say screw it and go with WHATEVER PARTS I WANT! haha. being a true tuner means sacrifice, right? LOL. what my question was, is... dont the cops need a warrant or at least probable cause to MAKE you pop your hood? so if you dont give him a reason to pull you over (i.e. fart can or busted taillights, etc) theres no way he can pull you over right?

I have a feeling that cop had no right for you to pop your hood.
He isn't a SMOG tech and AFAIK has no jurisdiction for making any sort of call like that.
I do know that the cops on the side of the road with the road-side SMOG checks do indeed have training and such for SMOG.
I'm curious if there is some new law or whatever that gives them this ability.
Wouldn't be the first time some cop stepped out of his zone to make a call he wasn't qualified on.
