Getting out
I wouldnt call him half hearted. one of the most dedicated guys to put every penny he has in his car. you just have to realize not all can keep going forever on this. at some point you have to take a break or move on to other stuff.
u gotta think Ryan that some of us are on our 20th project, and have put everything we make on a car for the last 10-15yrs. Its understandable that certain decisions are made to benefit yourself in the future rather than just living for a car.

I took last year off and this year I am seriously considering just parting out the car and getting rid of it altogether. Maybe put a few dollars in mods into my STI and just have a fun car to drive around and then finally buy a house.

this isn't exactly a cheap hobby!!.. and if you run into problems for a whole season and just feel like you are throwing money at something that just sits there then yeah a lot of people feel like giving up.. seriously this is my last season probably. its difficult now to get the car to events since i now have no more truck or trailer! its been rentals all last year.. and that adds up!! plus there is always something new that has to be bought for the car.... maybe i'll get a sponsor... yeah right.. anyway its going to be a fun year but in all honesty i'm probably going to stop for 09. i also have other hobbies that are expensive too! so its getting time to sell some of the toys and build just a few... also i think the off season makes more people think about it... all of a sudden i realized damn i have a lot of extra money now!!

If a lot of you guys considering selling would actually get out to the track and race then that feeling would likely go away. Building these things is fun, but if all you ever do is build and never get to race it who wouldn't feel like selling it all at some point?

94turboeg lived at the track. LOL. that guy ran his car every single week. We built him a motor a couple years ago and he probably put over 400 passes on it just in one year and its still going strong.
im with tony on that one for sure. i couldnt consider building a car for myself that i didnt race very frequently. hell it seems we go to an event every other week and usually test in between. now that i dont have to replace a trans every 2 pass's maybe i'll actually go fast
I'm always looking for something new to play with LOL Hmmm, my road racing
binge lasted 9 years, this year will be 9 years in drag racing... Always wanted to
try road rally, sideways in the dirt while looking over the side of a cliff looks like a blast!
Joe you sold your car? (sig)

you want to talk about spending money, go check out some rally cars. i'd say that a peice of crap rally car has 30k in just electronics in it.
yup its sold....cars in florida now for sale again lol. i'll be back out, dont worry.

I got out of the scene because of poor schedules and lack of rules and close events. That definatly puts a hurt on fundage when you have to travel over 1k miles to go to a race.. Just really not worth it IMO

Ok, i have to quote it too. lol.
I spent a solid year putting the current car together. At times, i really really felt like giving up. We ran into a bunch of bs as does everyone else im sure. And finally at the end of the season, we got a few clean passes in. Car ran great! Re-Opened my eyes to something i missed so much. Now I'm so excited for 08 its not even funny! I know all the bugs are worked out, just gotta do some safety stuff and a quick retune and we are good to go.
So for anyone mid-build... stick through it! I Promise it will be worth it.
To anyone with a car thats just been sitting. Take it out!! Race!!
Then if your still over it, oh well. haha.
I dont know the OP, and dont know his situation. But as for me, IM NOT STOPING ANYTIME SOOON!!!

I am sure everyone thinks about this from time to time. It always makes you think about- if you could do it all over again, would you? I know I have not nearly spent as much money as most on here but since last april I have spent a little under 10 grand. When I struggled with the build, I sat and thought to myself many times if i should just give up and call it a day. 10 grand would be nice to have back in the bank . However , as was already said, I was able to get the car to the track for the first time on the last day atco was open. I know this may sound gay, but as i pulled into the burnout box for the first time , i smiled to myself and said- you know, this was all worth it. And having the car run better than i thought it would , solidified those ideas.
I am sure everyone has their own situation and can justify whatever decision that they make. Like i said- I would love to have the money in the bank but next year when I am at the track those thoughts will be gone. . . at least for the time being
Damn, I think about it all the time. But once I start to work on the car or drive the car, I just forget about it because I am having to much fun.
For the most part it might be people just make to much of a step at once, doing everything in little projects, with racing in between makes it better, or that is what I do.
Also having a g/f that always asks what do I need next for the car also helps

never thought of it. I was thinking about putting the car on hold for a while so I could finish school. It's close to being somewhat done so i'm just gonna finish it. Once I go to the track for the first time I will have a lot of new ideas, experiments and improvements and it will never end
What Racing is All About
It's about money, of course; for most it's about finding it, finding enough of it, and then finding more. It's about guzzling money like water, about living with the guilt of burning up so much hard earned cash. But it's much more. It's about supremacy, being top dog, king of the hill, head honcho, the big kahuna; standing out above the crowd, being number one, the best. It's about speed. It's about riding the fastest, scariest, hold-onto-your-hats-geez-I'm-gonna-wet-my-pants-best-damn-roller-coaster ever invented. And it's about power. It's about leading the charge of a thousand screaming banshees, having your body wrenched and twisted and tossed about by the hands of great unseen forces; and it's about taming a blind raging Herculean monster, and bending it to your will. It's about brilliant colors, flashes of light, ear-splitting shrieks, and bone-rattling rumbles. It's about the unforgettable smell of burning rubber, smoldering brake pads, and gear oil. It's about reaching through the steering wheel all the way down to the tires and feeling the road slipping past your fingertips. It's about sensing the weight of the car shifting from tire to tire, like water in a pan. It's about the tug of the shoulder harness across the collar bones, and the cramp in the leg from pressing the gas pedal through the floor. Racing is about all of these things, and much more. It's about passion; burning desire, insatiable hunger. It's a perverse yet overwhelming love affair with steel, glass, and rubber. It's about a relentless courtship with speed. It's about conceiving and nurturing a child--the benefactor of your skill and wisdom, and a victim of your ignorance. It's about saving a rusting pile of disregarded scrap from the crusher and making it stronger, faster, more real and alive than it ever was, or ever deserved to be. It's about caring for your creation, loving it; pushing it to its limits, exalting in its greatness, and forgiving its weaknesses, because they are your weaknesses. It's about dreams and hopes and fears. Dreams of glory; dreams of carving out a small niche in history, like Mario, and Sterling, and "King Richard". Hopes. Hopes that the many long winter hours of lonely toil in the cold, dusty garage will bring smiles come May, and a nod of approval from the brutally indifferent stopwatch. Hopes that the brakes will be there on call, as you hurtle without recourse into the unforgiving concrete canyon. Hopes that, in the end, you'll be able to look back on the whole experience and find it worth the price, while living with the fear that it won't be. It's about determination, perseverance, and the strength of resolve. It's about patience and discipline. It's about putting in the time, double checking, attending to the critical details. It's about concentration, and focus. It's about controlling the overpowering urges, sticking to the game plan, and keeping your head when the unthinkable happens. It's about testing, and measuring, and worrying, and sweating the small stuff It's about faith; faith in yourself, in your crew, in your fellow competitors, in the workers, and in the men and women who designed this car, these tires, and this track. It's about believing in your roll cage, and your safety harness, your Nomex suit, and the fire system that has never been put to the test. It's about knowing that no matter what happens, you chose. It's about deep and lasting respect, caring, and friendships; about sharing joys and disappointments, pitching in, and easing the load. It's about living life in the cutting edge of a razor, hanging it all out there, going for broke. It's about knowing, without doubt, by-damn, that you're alive. It's about putting your heart and soul into something and letting the whole world see what you can do. It's about knowing that in the midst of the confusion and emotion and heart-stopping action, you were the one that mattered. -Anonymous

Just remember even when your older you can still be back in the sport.
Take a break if you feel the need, drag racing is going to be around for a long time.
I took a 14 year break from something I enjoyed. When it was time to get back into skiing, it was easy. You just have to want to do it.
I used to Drag race back in the 70's, now that Ryan is done with ski racing he has gotten me back into this sport.
There are lots of reasons to move on. Change is part of life.
edit:
The above post gave me another idea. It's about passion. Ryan gets it, he's talked about the passion.
If you decide to take a break, just remember to live life with passion.

I think Tony hit it right on the head. Within the last 4 years, I've gone through 2 setups. The first one was sold to buy a house but the current one that is still not finished is that I started building this thing when SFWD started getting big. I started piecing a car together from scratch and am almost done with it. Most of the parts are there I just have to put the thing together but with only myself and nobody else to help it's very hard. All my old race buddies have grown up and have left the sport and I am the only one stuck in there because I will lose too much money if I sold out this time.
Sometimes I do feel like giving up though. Every time I look at the piles of parts in the garage I want to give up but every time I log in to HT or go hit the local track and see someone doing good, I get a boost and start working on my car again.
I don't know, maybe I should just sell everything and start fresh with a daily driven platform with simple mods just to cure my itch for speed. Having 2 mortgages sure sucks nowadays.
