Default Vehicle Storage - Locations in CA recommended?

Well recently I lucked out into an 89 Civic Si Hatch with a b16 swap and a crunched hood and rad support for free from a friend.

Until now, I was planning on prepping my 91 Crx Si for autox/trackday events (it's stock - just rebuilt the d16A6 not too long ago, Koni/GC Susp, Sparco Driver seat, header, 15x7 Rota RB wheels)

Thing is the CRX was and still is in too nice a condition for me to feel good about tearing into it and tracking it, pretty near mint condition, one previous owner, even has it's stock radio still - parts are getting damn hard to find too.

So I plan on keeping it pretty much as is (swap Bilstein Struts/Eibach Springs from the civic and pull the Sparco seat) and putting it into storage for a little while I work on the civic. As it is now, we're running out of space, I have the civic and crx, as well as my CL and my wife's Volvo V50.

Is there any place you guys can recommend in Burbank/Pasadena/Glendale areas that i can store a vehicle for a decent price?

There is this awesome new place that is geared for car guys and RV guys, however it's in Rancho Cuchamunga (sp?). Fine for going to or from Cali Speedway, but way out of the way if you just want to check up on things.

Thanks in advance guys. Oh and any tips for storing the car for extended periods? I do plan on taking it out and driving it once in a while, but I do want to store it as best I can.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not of any help in regard to your problem... but would you mind filling us in on the name of the place in Rancho Cucamonga?

I'm currently lucky enough to be renting a single space in a garage for $50 from a neighbor... damn cheap for around here. But still doesn't give me anywhere to work on my car. Plus now what we're doing LeMons races we are going to be acquiring cars all too quickly.

It's a great place, so far only two locations, this one and Salt Lake City. But apparently if you're serious about having an away from home workspace - you can also add a second floor loft area - you have all electrical outlets in the unit, public restroom, security access, etc.

It just is to far away from me to seriously consider for right now.

I can't believe that this question has only gotten 2 responses? I know some others have dealt with or are dealing with this as well - not everyone in CA that has an race/pleasure car is a homeowner.

don't you have a friend or family member with extra space....

what about a large self-storage drive up unit?
Maybe you can put your car on those wheel caster thingys and scoot it in

Crazydave - that's an idea i was toying with, but i know how some places dont like storing vehicles. So i wanted to see if there were any that were known from personal experience.

As for family members, the ones that have property with garage space are in NY. My mom lives in a retirement building with secured underground garage, but I dont want her to get hassled since it's not her car.

Other than that, not many options. Eventually I would like to see if I can get a permit to knock down my existing garage (front side of house) and run the driveway all the way to the back and do a simple 3 car garage in back. But that is still a while a way.

My Condo complex does not allow me to work on cars in either my spot in the garage, nor in the outside parking lot. Having a place to actually work, even if I don't necessarily need the storage space, is a very appealing concept, especially with power.

Thanks for the link. Wish I had other alternatives to add to this thread.

I know that some self-storage areas will also rent parking spaces... but they are not always covered... nor do I think they will let you work on your car there either.

After 4 repeated vandalisms on our company cars, we moved our cars to be parked at a self-storage facility.

dang, whats a place like that cost to store an RV?

craigslist has a parking/storage for rent section. post up your needs.

seems like commercial vehicle storage is widely available. just gotta pay.

At XL I believe I was quote like $200 for a 10x20 space. So Tyson, I can only imagine what a RV space is like.

I definately don't need a space to work on stuff, I do have my garage, and I like to be able to let my wife park in there as well.

I remember that back when i was trying to store my old Toyota Starlet I had a hard time because self storage places wanted to make sure the car was registered, and operational - which the starlet was not.

With the CRX I don't have that issue. And I do expect to pay, but like I said, I was just checking to see if anyone had one they used and liked.

For the XL one to be worth it, I say F it, let's get a group together, find the biggest space we could, add a mezzanine level and make it a HT unit, lol.

I wonder how many cars we could fit in their biggest space?

At $200.00 a month for trailer parking, I was seriously considering the amount of (and likelyness of receiving) fines from the City I would get per month vs the monthly cost of renting a trailer parking spot for my open trailer vs the cost to make my side yard bigger and enclosed.

I decided not to fight with the city, and not rent, since 3 years rent of a space would equal the cost of making my side yard ready for storage (within the city's ordinace for storage of trailers)

I wish I had that option.

I just dont have any area I can easily enclose. Man, I wish I had a garage tall enough, I'd just get a lift and store the civic and crx stacked, lol.

I own. We had the house about 5 or more years now. That's why I wanted to tear down the existing garage and rebuild in the back yard. However we have tenants renting a room back behind there, so that's a no go, for now at least.

so yeah, moving is out for now. either way, i could have worse issues to deal with so, I'm not losing any sleep over it just yet.

Maybe it's time to clean out the garage.

Thats what I did, I played throw away, bought some steel shelving (not the flimsy ones, the big heavy duty manly ones)

and I was able to squeeze a 2nd car in our garage. yes it's tight... but at least I have storage....

My road to racing started in 2005:

1.) Buy a car *
2.) Make it trackable & reliable (new tranny, belts, oil, tires, shocks, springs, etc) *
3.) Make the Car fit in the garage *
4.) Get trailer storage*
5.) Buy a trailer*
6.) Buy a truck
7.) Race prep the car ( roll cage, etc)

* = step completed.

Oh I can get two cars in there - problem is for me to actually be able to work on anything I need one out. and since we have 2 more plus these 2, it's gets crowded quick, lol.

Plus like I said, once i find a place, the CRX will do cold storage for now while i work out the civic. plus if it is stored secured, I can reduce insurance coverage on the crx. If it's anywhere that I'll have to pull it on the street, I'd want full coverage.

I never intended to have these many cars, or even worse, a trailer queen - but hey, who can pass up a free car with a swap that isnt a basket case?

Slightly off topic again... but I contacted XL storage and they are purely storage, not workspaces. Here's a copy of the email they sent me:

"Thanks for your inquiry! We definitely have the size you are looking for! I’d recommend either a 14x45, 16x45, or even a 28x45. The 28x45 would feel most like a two car garage though it would even be a bit bigger. A 14x45 runs $425/month, a 16x45 runs $495/month, and a 28x45 runs $900/month. We don’t have anymore 10x20’s but they usually run $210/month.

I also have to ask you what kind of work you would be doing on your vehicle inside the unit – simply because the city puts restrictions on what kind of things can be done inside. Basically we can’t have any major or even minor alterations – oil changes, welding, painting, engine work, etc. It basically is still just a storage space more than anything."

Wow, that's too much for me. Count me out unless there is a serious H-T pool going around where we store a lot of cars in one huge lot and the cost goes way down. I'm opting just for a car cover and keeping it outside.

Colin I'm suprised at their answer to you, as they do indicate on the website that it makes a good workspace as well. This may just be a "legal" answer by email, but certain work is allowed?

Yes, I was wondering that as well. My guess would be that if you change your motorhome's oil a couple times a year or need to install some fog lights on it you'd be fine, but anything more serious and/or more frequent would be a problem.

When I read through their site I didn't see "workspace" mentioned at all... but maybe I missed it.

I forgot where I had seen that information, but I do recall there being mention of being able to do some work/workspace being ok.

Eh, either way, my wife has been really nice about all this and is just letting me go ahead and use the full garage for both EF's until we can get this all figured out.
