Default PCV valve question! please help :)

ok well i added a new intake manny on my car (gsr motor) a few months back and i noticed that the car smoked after i added it. i got a few friends to look at it and see what the problem is and one of them said that the pcv valve was missing? what exactly does the valve do?

I didnt put it back on because there isn't a hook up on my new intake manifold. my compression is near perfect and my valve seals are fine so i was wondering if this is a common problem when the pcv valve isnt hooked up?

also could i get one at the local parts store and is a single cam (vx motor) pcv valve the same valve as a gsr? thanks

Pcv valve, positive crankcase ventilation, pretty much just regulates the pressure in the crank crank of the suction, and pressure created by the pistons moving up and down. I wasnt sure if they hooked to the i/m though, i thought it had a line connected to a diaphram (from pcv) looking peice that sat in the mani, then had a line that went out of that to the head though. Im not sure how this could make the car smoke however, unless you plugged it up with something.

You're correct, the PCV valve stands for positive crankcase ventalation. The PCV valve is wedged into the valve cover(s) (usually) and then has a hose running from it to the intake manifold. It vents the crankcase from pressure building inside of it from compression leaking passed the piston rings. The thing is when it releases this pressure into the intake manifold, it usually sends a bit of oil with it. Essentially, it's an emissions item, but obviously also does good things for your motor as stated above. You don't want to leave the hose open since you'll be getting a small ammount of oil coming out of it. Some people just opt to put a small filter on it instead of the tube. Yes, they can get plugged up. The PCV valve has a small check ball inside of it to prevent air from flowing backwards through it. If it gets plugged, I can see how it may bog the engine down a bit. But the above poster is right, it shouldn't be making the car smoke. Something else is causing it most likely.

The PCV valve hose is supposed to go from the valve cover to the intake tube. Your aftermarket intake doesn't have a fitting for the hose? As far as I knew all of them did. If it doesn't, you could just leave it open if you want, but keep in mind you will have some oil seepage out of the hose and if you live in emissions testing areas, you may not pass a visual inspection.
