how to make power?
ok, so i just bought a 1998 honda civic lx 4-door. can someone give me any ideas on how to make it i little bit more powerful then it is. managed to hit about 95 mph on interstate, but cant decide between just swapping for a b18c5 or if i should turbo it...any ideas?
You could do I/H/E and youll get a little more power. I doubt the speed limit on your interstate is 95 so be careful if you choose to speed. Id go with the b18 swap if you are looking into it. It will probaby be more reliable in the long run. (Im not knocking on you boost people, I was just saying) But with a good tune and internals on low boost im sure a boosted car can be just as reliable. B18 still my choice
It really depends on your budget and goals for the car. Stock internal D series turbo builds are good for 220-240whp and would cost about the same as an ITR swap. IMO, if you're going to swap anything, snag either an LS or GSR. Either of them are great candidates for turbo setups.
Another option is an Eagle/Vitara build on your D series. Not only are those builds cheap, they also allow you to make upwards of 400whp on your D. There are many options out there, but your budget and goals will determine which route is best for you

boosting a b18c5 is a waste. yoiure obviously new to this game so i would probably recommend just doing intake heade and exhaust. but after spending all that money youre not going to net anything much more then about an extra 15hp. if you really want to make some power and make your car a little mroe fun is just slap a little turbo setup on your stock single cam. then later down the raod, once you learn a little more about the honduhz, id say swap in a b18b (integra ls motor) they make great torque. and alot of the parts you used for your single cam turbo setup will work on the b18b. you'll just need to swap the manifold and a few other small things. frankly if your looking to make power your not gonna find it with a honda unless you are strongly looking at boost.
haha, well. money is a lil bit of a problem, i mean right now im in school. during the summer i work 60 hours a week and pull in about 300-400 a week, so when summer hits money wont be a problem, and i wanna make the car to where it will be dependiable, but have a assload of hp and a assload of tq, i mean would it be smart to just go ahead and swap out the motor and but a b18 in it?

You must be new to reading. He never said he was going to boost the C5. All motor civics can make power and go fast. Not a single cam, unless you plan on spending a retarded amount of money.

Well i dont know what you consider to be an "***-load", but a stock GSR/B16 can make a good amount of power for the street. As you can tell by my sig, i'm at 315whp and even that gets to be a handful on street tires. You'd be surprised how much power you dont need in order to have fun.
If you can afford it, a simple LS/VTEC or GSR with a piston/rod combo and a good turbo setup can get you into the 10's. I'm shooting for 400whp on E85 with my build over the winter...Its not so much for the track times, but fun on the street

i'd boost the d
if you're on a budget, get yourself a home made turbo setup, and boost up to about 230hp on stock internals. play with that for a summer, break it in... see how you like it. just take it easy on the clutch, will ya?
if you wanna boost up a little higher and test your luck, i suggest you get some arp studs and a new gasket, preferrably something that's gonna lower your compression. remember that you can't boost past 11psi on stock map sensor! the trick is in the tune. some people been successful with 260hp+ on z6 and y8.
z6 is nice, y8 needs better oil pump imo.

I would, and know people that do it. Just because these motor are easy to find and cheap. Any one tryed out the tornado that goes into the intake? J/k

You can have fun with a boosted SOHC with stock internals (not a retarded amount of money, faster, and cheaper than any swap.
"But the ITR and K20 are faster" - yeah - but they cost a ****-ton more.

Yeah boosted singles are fun. I was refering to making an all motor single cam, being a retarded amount of money.

Do what most new people to Honda's do, I/H/E.. sooner or later you will realize that you wasted your money on a D-series and you will want to swap it out. I did that and now im going to be doing a LS swap because they are reliable and have a lot of potential. Good Luck with whatever you do though

Nice. I actually know somebody that did put like 3 of those turbonator tornado things in. I was like wow, did you for real spend $120 on that to waste 30 minutes of your time putting that in. But go with an ls swap man. They are reliable, cost less than a gsr swap, and you could get some serious power out of it. Like schister66 said, you'd be amazed how much power you don't need to have fun on the street. unless your going to a race track, you don't need all that much power to have fun. besides, how much are you really going to speed on the street. we all love to have our little races here and there, but face it, unless your involved in street racing, which you shouldn't be, you just don't need an "*** load" of power to have fun.

well i don't know about all that now, how about good suspension, good tires, maybe a nice intake and exhaust, and a little bit of high hp. now that's fun. but ya still gotta go a little fast.

haha, very true, how much power is reasonable for street use, and i mean, im not really "involved" in street raceing, a few friends are and they are the ones tryin to talkk me into a c5, but after i swap it should i go turbo or n/a?

They also don't break down. Remember that you get what you pay for. With an ITR or K swap, you will literally have stock Honda reliability. The same cannot be said about a boosted D.

honestly man, it's all up to you. if your not takin it on the track, and your not street racing, then your going to spend 2g just to be able to fly from 20 to 80 and back down to 70 for a second or two. me personally, i wouldn't do it. But i'm not sayin don't turbo it. For now work on the engine though. if i were you man, i'd do an ls swap, that much power in your little tiny and light *** car is gonna make it fly. do a little work on that, and when your finally ready, turbo the ls. It'll be fast as **** and cheaper than a c5 to i think. You just gotta decide what you have the money for and what your willing to do with that money.

have you ever considered an h2b swap they are more work but cheaper than a c5 and make more hp and tq still having a good close ratio transmission of your choice? it is my plan for my ls hatch down the road after i finish the turbo eclipse in my avatar
