Default Best/cheap swap for 92 civic si

I got a 1992 civic si hb, It is completely stock I just bought it a month ago, came with ac and everything. It has 175k miles on the engine so I'm thinking of swapping a new engine in there. People told me to swap b series because it'll be easy, but which is the easiest or the cheapest with a decent/good performance.

Its only the SECOND thread in the whole list which is stickied and has like 35 pages of info!!!

Beat me to it. I would suggest A GSR B18C1 swap.

I trip over b18s all day. Decent power and you can build on them real easy. I'd stay with your single cam for as long as possible though. Gas is becomming liquid gold.

I get better gas mileage with my 5-speed GS-R compared to my old automatic D15B7

Read the FAQ's on motor swaps, and draw your own conclusions.

A zc motor is good cheap motor, but if u can find a b20.......with a tranny, I have seen em for $750+shipping & handling, that way if u want more power later, u can swap a b-series vtec head on it, and there u go, u got a b20 vtec.(oh yeah, b20's are more torque than hp stock, and come in CRV's)

go with a GSR swap if you want something wasy and somewhat affordable. If you want something cheap with fewer miles to build off of go with another z6 or get a y8 motor.

A ZC is, in my opinion, not even as good as what he already has. Yes, a DOHC ZC MIGHT have a few more HP. But it is seriously lacking when it comes to the aftermarket. If he just drops in a better cam, he will be MUCH better off than he would with a ZC. And for boost, it really doesn't matter.

Seriously, in a car that already has a D16Z6, there just isn't a better D-series motor out there. If you want to do any kind of worthwhile swap, it is going to have to be AT LEAST a B-series. In this case, the most cost-effective swap would be a non-VTEC B20. A B20Z with i/h/e will give you HP similar to a B16A, but with MUCH more torque.

Unless you are going to swap over to a CX motor (D15B8) or VX motor (D15Z1), there is NO fuel economy advantage to D-series over B-series. And neither of these will give you performance that could remotely be considered to be good.

A b series engine an range from under a thousand dollars to 5 thousand dollars. Which one? there's the b16, b18c1, b18c5 which would be the mopst expensive.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the B18b. This engine can be found extremely cheap. MAte it with a good tranny and your for the most part set.

edit: and good for boosting it even on stock internals.^^

There is no "best/cheapest" swap. It's all opinion. All engines have their pros, cons, and varying costs. Read the FAQ to help form your own opinion.

IMHO, best bang for the buck is swapped LS, then boost it as the money comes.

Well from MY experiences, I own a 92 SI came stock with the z6.. after a spun bearing I bought a "ZCVTEC" which IN MY OPINION (coming from some one who has had BOTH) is alot better then a d16z6.. however if there is nothing wrong with your engine I wouldnt swap to it for no reason.
Dont let people in here tell you that this motor doesnt exist either.. any japanese motor importer will tell/show you otherwise..
My hatch has beat.... ls integras, ls hatches, B16 hatches, 00 SI, bearly lost to the new SI coupe. (with a 6"8 360lb passenger)
I ran a 10.1 with bald street tires in the 1/8th mile
My buddy had another ZCVTEC in his crx SI and he ran a 9.75 STREET TIRES
Ive swapped this engine 3 times now in my hatch a dx crx and a si crx
and it is relatively easy.
