Best performance 185-60-14 STREET tire
Looking for some good street tires. The CRX doesn't get driven in the snow, and I try to keep it out of the rain. Looking at a Sumitomo HTR200? right now. Any suggestions?
Since it won't get driven in snow, you can use summer tires, which grip better in moderate to warm temperatures than all-seasons. There's only one really decent summer tire available in 185/60-14, AFAIK - the Yokohama ES100. Much better than the Sumitomos mentioned previously.
For those who have to use the same tires in snow as in moderate to warm temperatures, there's one really good all-season tire available in 185/60-14 - the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position. Much better than the Yoko Avids mentioned previously, which are also all-seasons.
BFG does not make a g-Force tire in this size.

These are the G Force tires I was looking at, but I guess I procrastinated too long.

That size is suitable for Integras and '97-00 Civics. 185/60-14 is a better match for CRXs, del sols, and '95 and older Civics. If this is for your '90 or '91 Civic hatch, stick to 185/60-14; if you're looking for more tire choices, consider getting 15" wheels with 195/50-15 tires, or 16" wheels with 195/45-16 or 205/40-16 tires.
As for choices in 195/60-14, for you Integra drivers...
If you don't have to use these in snow or frigid cold, you can get summer tires, and you have a couple more decent options in 195/60-14, depending on what you're looking for. Here's how they shape up:
Yokohama ES100 - very good dry traction, excellent in rain, last a reasonably long time (25-40K miles)
Falken Azenis RT-615 - outstanding dry traction, so-so in rain, very short treadlife (10-12K miles)
Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212 - in between the previous two in each characteristic - excellent dry traction, okay in rain, moderate treadwear (15-20K miles)
For all-seasons, the RE960AS is again the best in 195/60-14.

Good thing, too. Those are BFGoodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S tires. It's an all-season tire, and not a very good one, either. (BFG's top all-season is the g-Force KDWS.) Furthermore, they discontinued that size a while ago, so who knows how long those tires have been kicking around. In any case, the ES100 will give you way better performance (outside of snow) than those.

ok, thanks for your insight. I guess being busy pays off, it saved me from buying old tires. What is your overall impression of the Sumitomo HTR200? It costs almost 1/2 the cost of the Yoko ES100. 44 vs. 74. I don 't drive the CRX much, so I'm looking for some 14's for my stock rims while my 15" rims are refinished. Thanks again.

Well, those Sumitomos are just not very good. But they're cheap. And if you're just looking for something you can use for a little while while your rims are shipped out for refinishing, you might not want to spend the money for the ES100. If I knew I were going to use one of these tires for a long time and a lot of miles, I think the ES100 is worth the money for anyone who cares about performance - and I recognize that doesn't include everyone.

Okay, thanks. I had just wondered because they had a lot of good reviews on Tirerack.com. I am debating the tire issue because I am riefinishing the 15 inch wheels for 2 reasons. 1. They are dirty and the paint is peeling, and 2. I may have to sell them to pay bills. If that is the case, I may end up getting the ES100s for my stock rims. It's a damned if I do, damned if I don't. Maybe I'll buy 1 ES100 at a time for now. Thanks-Chris

Yeah, you really can't trust the reviews, and this is the perfect example why. The worse the tire, the more likely the people who buy them haven't tried anything else, which is why they're content with crappy tires.

For those with 14" wheels on CRXs, del sols, and pre-'96 Civics, there's another possibility I forgot to mention. In addition to 185/60-14, another size you can use is 195/55-14. And there's a decent summer tire available in that size - the Toyo T1-R, $71/tire at onlinetires.com Like the ES100, it offers very good dry traction, excellent rain traction, and pretty long treadlife.
LOL, I have the Toyo T1Rs on my 15 inch wheels. Didn't even think of them. I'll look into them. Thanks for the idea.
