Honestly, man... If you can't speak properly, you're going to look incompetent to the customer.
And if you don't have a GED, you're going to have a hard time finding install work at any reputable shop. Sure, you can throw decks in at Crazy Harry's House Of Stereo's, but anywhere else & you'll have a tough time.
Not criticizing by any means... Good luck.

just order the mecp basic installer study guide, read it, and pass the test. good luck getting a job though, experience is the only thing that matters to them. start doing stuff for friends and take pics.
just because i don't have a GED dos'nt mean i cant SPEAK professinally... BUT it is in the works...
so lets say i have my GED...
and i go to a installer school...
and i do well at it....
what are my chances of making good money
would it be better to go to mobile dynamics (even though i live in california)

A high school diploma or GED is over rated and just as worthless as not having one. It's good to have one to prove to yourself you can do it. But I would not let it hold you back. Good luck with your classes.
90% of high school graduates I doubt could pass the US immigration test to become a citizen LOL.

It depends on what you think is "good money"

car audio school = waste of money IMO...nothing but broken promises and letdowns, most of them seem to just want your money. call local shops and ask what they think about car audio school.
if i were you i would seek an apprenticeship at a shop nearby. who knos, you might like it and they can hire you full time if youre good.

Stick with Mobile Dynamics, it is the best installers school there is, they have been around longer then any of others, before the two guys that started M/D they ran tech support/training at Alpine Canada, I attended all the Alpine installer training seminars and most of the Mobile Dynamics ones [until I got my master installers certificate].
As mentioned, experience is what gets you a job, however, many places now will ask if you have a MECP certificate, or some kind of schooling, and most owners could care less if you have a high school diploma, they are concerned that you can do the job properly and efficiently.
Just like the rest of us, you will start at the bottom, see if you can find a job in a shop as a "lugen", [flunky, new kid, grunt], the chances of getting that job are a lot better if you have a Mobile Dynamics and MECP certificate and tools, [I do not hire installers, even lugens, that do not have the tools of the trade]
BTW, figure on spending the next 5 years learning the trade, [hands on] and getting the experience you need to apply for the position that will make you "good money" good luck finding somebody willing to pay you 3G a month to start.

i would get a job as a mobile sales person first so you get an idea of products out there and how they work with each other, then work your way up to installer status, back in the day i was a mobile sales person in best buy for i think acutely not even a year, but because i gained allot of knowledge during that time they started giving me training hours outside in the install bay, but back then we had hella old school installers so i learned allot from them, and now i am advanced certified. i didn't pay for anything best buy pays for my mecp books and testing, so i didn't pay anybody for the knowledge and skills i acquired they paid me
i know some community colleges have mobile electronics courses you can take. you can always volunteer some time at a local best buy to get some installation experience.
If you are only making $700/month right now, and wanna make good money fast without having to pay to go to school, go SELL CARS!!! serious.. go work at a big car dealership in your area. Nissan, Ford, Chevrolet, Mazda, CARMAX, Dodge, Honda, Acura.
You will make the most money working for a USED CAR lot. Honda, Acura probably isn't the best to make a lot of money and they want someone with experience usually.
I was in the same position as you, but I did graduate from High School, and a 4 year University Degree in Business. But everyone still wanted me to start at the bottom. I was going to be an Car Audio Installer at Best Buy for $10/hr and they wanted me to get MECP Certified. They would pay for me to get certified and when I did, I would get a $2.00 rise. But then I went to a Nissan Dealership and got hired in their USED car department. My first month I made $2300, next month $2000, then $3300, $1900. It just depends on the store and the business they are doing. I took a few months off because i thought it wasn't what I wanted to do. So I've been looking around and the only jobs I could find once again are jobs that pay less than $10/hr. So what did I do? I just got a job at Infiniti selling New cars. My first month I get $2000 regardless of what I sell.
If you see yourself doing that for a few years, then you might like it. But I think if you just wanna make a lot of money and not spend any going to school, then go sell cars.
