Default LS Turbo? or keep it stock?

So I've been thinking about this all of 2007. February is coming up so you know what that means, INCOME TAX RETURNS!! In 2007, I spent my income tax return money on lowering my car and other suspension stuff. My plan for 2008 was to turbo my stock LS.

However there are somethings thats holding me back:

1. Car theft in my area is somewhat pretty bad.
2. It is my daily driver and I don't have another car. This means I do take it to the mall from time to time and other places.
3. Even though I keep it locked up (it takes me 55 seconds to disarm all my locks and such lol), I park in the streets when I am at work.
4. My car is so reliable right now. It always starts up every time and never gives me any problems. And yes, I know the importance of getting a good tune when going turbo for reliability but still.

Reasons I want to go turbo:
1. Who doesn't?!?!
2. Everytime I see a turbo integra, i drool lol.
3. I don't have vtec, so it gets kinda boring sometimes lol!
4. Hearing that whipping BOV everytime I shift and the adrenaline rush a turbo car gives.

I don't know if I'm just being paranoid. One side of me is saying, "Just go for it! It's now or never!" and another side is going, "be on the safe side and don't waste your money on something that will get stolen."

Should I turbo?

If theft is the only thing holding you back, then I say turbo it. Turbo or not there is still a chance it will get stolen, thats just something you have to deal with when driving a honda.

If I were in your situation I wouldn't do it.

Yes a turbo'd car would be fun, and it wouldn't be that noticeable with a black intercooler and you don't go trying to race everyone.

But IMO, it will loose its luster after a while and then from there your going to want to dump more money into it. Your always going to want it to be faster.

I say take the money and if your able to save it up and purchase a project car or motor (then get a shell when ready). Take your time do things real nice and don't worry about theft cause its not driven daily or left in unsecured places.

Edit - and you will not have to worry about reliability issues as well.

You said it was stock with suspension mods, so I say add some QUALITY bolt ons. Depending on the amount of your return, a set of Stage 1 Cams would be nice as well.

The project car/ motor is a great idea as well.

Well I am expecting to get back about 3,500 and I plan on giving 2 grand to my folks. So I'll have about 1,500 to myself. As for alarm and locks, I already have a 2 way pager (Viper's new 5900) and I already have 5 different locks I all put on at the same time.

As far as bolt ons, I'd rather invest my money on real power. I'd rather go turbo rather than doing the whole I/H/E + cams at the cost of 1,000 just to gain 8-10 horsepower.

For $1,500 your better off saving your money.

Even if you buy everything used for a good price I don't see how your still going to have money left over for a good tune. Your budget is to small.

I was expecting you to say you have a 3k+ budget, worst case 2K something.

Well I got friends that work at tuner shops that could get me good deals on real quality stuff so it's not like I am looking to get a cheap ebay turbo that'll crack on me.

I boosted my DD and it has run fine for 2 years. Also, Premium costs barely more than regular. Another great alternative is E85 if its available in your area

id say if you have about 1500, take your motor out sell it and buy a type-r swap or even just ta gsr swap, throw some cams and a valvetrain in it, with a I/H/E get it tuned and you'll deffentily have a fun DD car that will be reliable.

i have a 93 da ls... turbo running on 12psi... i fully rebuilt my block and head because im looking at entering the 300+ hp....

my opinion is... if you want to boost you got to ask yourself how much and then you can factor everything else in...

most setups now a days you can run pretty primitively but without the right tune they run shitty very quickly so...

I would say consider the following if you want to turbo:

1) Upgrade internals for longevity of your engine if its a daily driver... Rods, Pistons, Bearings, (For Block)

2) Upgrade your timing belt for sure but becareful when doing (Head) cams for example will affect your idle even when tuned right... if the car is rev'd high (between 3k-4k) it will idle slightly higher then usually probably approaching 2k mark and then settle down

3) Are you going bolt-on turbo kit? or Custom setup? Bolt on would be cheaper and it sounds like the way you would want to go... running primitively 8psi to 9psi will greatly improve the way the car moves... i suggest upgrading your injectors nothing major to 330cc or something around there... i ran my car on stock injectors for almost 3,300 miles without any major problems...

4) Computer wise you will be fine if you keep the psi below 9lbs... anything more and you will get a check engine and actually the ecu wont let you boost past that...

5) Upgrade to MSD ignition and check your spark plugs from time to time you will know when they are failing out because around 5k rpm the car will start running like **** and wont gain power smoothly...

I dont know what else to say and might of missed things but bottom line is if your looking at a modest setup then turbo is worth going... the negative is that it is addictive and once you have a taste you will want to boost more... but if not its worth the investment and when done right at 8psi can be a great daily driver....

feel free to contact me for any specific questions...

oh and $1,500 is not a substantial amount of a budget to go turbo... you will probably only be able to afford a used turbo if that... i would say if you are serious about turboing then times your intial budget by 4 and you maybe in the playing field... good luck nonetheless!!!

$6000 budget.

Honestly, you do not need that much to have a good reliable setup. Maybe, if your motor is absolute ****, but still thats a lot of money. For that much you can have a fully built motor.
