xs650 build
1/3/08
I helped a guy from work move in return the for help he gave me the bike. It stayed outside for a while until parts started to pile up in my apartment so I decided it was time to start working on it. Its like 10 degrees here right now and I have an extra living room in my apartment so my brother and I got it upstairs. Neither of us are big guys so it wasn't easy.
As for plans for the bike they are make it a rigid frame and give it a bobber look.
I just got started on taking the bike apart this weekend so not a lot to show so far but I plan for he build to move at a somewhat fast pace (it is winter here so theres not a lot to do if you hate winter). Most work will be done at my apartment as well as the shop I work at. I have an tool and die apprenticeship and a machine shop with a lot of helpful tools and other ****, so alot of work will also be done there.
Parts I already have:
front wheel (spoke from a 78 xs)
peanut gas tank
rear fender
built hardtail

just for reference for example with a pretty similar frame build (pic from jockey journal)

hardware I cleaned up at work in solvent

forks getting painted flat black

how it sits now getting disassembled

the stairs the bike had to be carried up to my apartment

how the bike started once in my apartment

on the bright side, in this situation, he can always ride the thing out if worse comes to worse
i like it though

Well, building an engine in your basement and then not being strong enough to carry it up the stairs made for one of the most, if not THE most epic thread honda-tech has ever seen.

yea I guess we'll find out how it rides downstairs... actually I plan to build the rolling chassis in my apartment and have the engine work going down in a garage... anyway heres a pic. I plan to get the hard tail built in the next week or so and than assembling the chassis. Still waiting on rear wheel and tires.
You might want to bolt the motor back in place while attaching the hardtail. I don't know if you've seen my thread, but I'm building a chopper using the same bike as a base, and when you cut off that rear section, the rear downtube needs to be held in place somehow, otherwise, you could weld the hardtail on, try to install the motor and find it's 3/4" out of whack or something.
