Default tow hook?

i plan on running my car next year in a few time attack events. i was checking out the rules and its saying you must have a front tow hook. now my question is, is there really any size tow hook that you must have?i was looking into a j's racing tow hook or possible getting a tow strap?

iam not looking for anything fancy, just something that will do the job if needed.. anyone have any input on what they are running etc? thanks

before you say search i did, didnt find much

right from the bumper support, using a U bolt. you can roll it up and tuck it away too. so its not an eye sour, or as i like to call the flashy benen hooks, shin bangers..

thats what i was thinking, thanks man... i dont want a big hook sticking in front of my car everyday as its my only car. lol.. i guess mount the U bolt one the underside of the bumper support that way it wont hit the bumper when being used?

i think nasa and scca both require the whole in the tow strap/hook to be bigger then 1.5". This is so the saftey workers can fit their tow strap through yours.

That's what I'm using for front and rear, and it works great. Soft tow-straps are really the way to go... you can tuck them away nicely, you don't bust you leg on it when walking around the front of the car, and you don't cause additional damage if you tap the back of another car. It was more than strong enough when I used it to get pulled out of the mud. Very good product.

And yeah, stay away from the JDM and "tuner" crap. If something is a big hit over in the appearance forum, or you see it on some ricer's daily driver, then it's usually garbage when it comes to actual race use.

I'm also loking at getting tow straps but I wonder if the bumper is strong enougn to not be ripped off when being pulled out of kitty litter? any one have a tested place to mount it so it wont damage the bumper or cover?? also looked at mounting on the frame but it dont see a good way to snake it through the bumper so it doesn't tear anything when the load is added

Most every one i know attaches them to the bumper support, and i have seen A LOT of cars get towed with them.

Just make sure you attach them good and strong.

At the last race i was at, a car was getting towed in (lifted off the ground and being pulled) the car was almost to the pit stall and the attachment of the tow strap broke off, the car fell to the ground hard, ( it only had one front wheel). They had to struggle to get the up off the ground.

I agree. The method of attachment is sure to fail before the bumper itself fails. RJ had some good pics of his installation awhile back, try searching for that.

Turns out it's on a different forum, here are the pics to give you an idea:

In the last pic, you can see the finished product. The strap in the first pics is just for mock-up. You can also see how this exact location required a slot to be cut into the bumper, which is to prevent the bumper from getting ripped off in the case of a tow. There are some minor differences in mounting location you can do to avoid bumper cutting, and it'll be a bit different on a Civic anyway.

You're correct. A lot of guys use the OEM rear tow eye, others do a similar thing to this strap. I personally prefer the strap, as it could be located higher.

right the rear tow tow "hook" is strong and easily accessible, the fronts are not.

Anyone know where you can find a big U-bolt like that? And how can you tell if a U-bolt like that will be strong enough?
