Default Quick bitch: advancing timing on '96 Lude.

I hate OBDII. It's like the same car, but none of my tricks work.

That bottom hole on the dist. doesnt have a channel, it's simply a hole, and won't allow you to turn the dist. forwards or backwards. I HATE OBDII! I'm seriouisly considering running two bolts only, but... alas, I know I can't do that. *sigh*

how do you fifth gen guys DO this?

Why not just toss an OBD1 ecu in it?

Not my cash I'm spending. LOL

Mike has given me a budget and a few ideas.

Intake, exhaust, header, FPR, test pipe and hope the OBDII doesn't go bazerk.

Just get his suspension finished. I'll get my dyno charts uploaded this week. Hopefully that will generate some new ideas.

I don't wanna have to install NAWZ y0. But, I guess it would be the best "bolt on" outside of a turbo kit.

I figure get as fast as you can afford to NA and then spray on it.

2 bolts, well i did this to my friends 5th gen. i act was retarding the timing for n2o. but to be honest i dont think it made a difference. on my 93 when u move the distributor the idle changes slightly depending on the way u turn it. on his 97 it didnt make a difference. but we left it in the retarted postion anyway. it hasnt moved in a few months w/only 2 bolts. im going to get a timing light on it this week.

Don't bother with the timing light, your ignition timing hasn't changed any on the 5th Gen. The OBD II engines have moved the CKP and TDC sensors which are responsible for ignition timing from the distributor to the crank behind the crank pulley.

yeah, where is it on the H22A1 though? I know they changed it for the H22A4... did they do the same mod on the A1 for 96?

I've never looked. If they did OBD II correctly, they would have had to since the CKP sensor in the distributor is not accurate enough to detect individual cylinder misfire.

It's easy to tell. Take off the distributor cap. If it has the three seperate trigger wheels inside that look like this, then you can advance the timing:

If it only has a single 1 tooth trigger wheel then you won't be able to:

so if i cant advance or retard the timing, how do I build up the engine for Nitrous, or turbo, or even NA (since thats the way I am going)

If you don't actually go for a full standalone ECU, you can still use electronics that advance and retard timing, like the MSD timing controlers.

BTM.. might as well get yourself an OBDI conversion.
Then have it chipped by someone like Prospeed or ImportReview/ImportBuilder.

Although, a BTM is a nice thing to have.

BTM = Boost Timing Master It's probably not what you would use for simple timing adjustements unless you had a turbo on. If you run through the MSD website you can see a number timing controllers they have out now.

I'm pretty sure Yoshio can program the 96 OBD II ECU with his TechTom stuff. It's very expensive, though. The OBD II chips have everything burnt on to one chip and each burn costs quite a bit plus his time and dyno time and you might as well get a standalone and do it yourself.
