Default Fuel Cell Fabrication

Anyone around hear custom fabbed a fuel cell? I'm looking at building a large fuel cell for my 280z project that I will primarily be running on E85. I am just wondering how thick of material you guys have used on fuel cells. I'm thinking I will be using aluminum for the tank. I'm shooting for around 30+gallons without taking up the whole hatch portion of the car.

i used .090" for the 2 stroke oil tank i posted a little while ago. i'm going to eventually be doing a fuel tank for my project car as well, but intend to add some baffles. something to consider if you might need them.

we used .090" on our fuel cell for our s2000 powered sandrail, as well as our 39 chrysler hotrod.

Sounds like a couple people have chimed in with thickness.

Could you guys tell me what kinda of aluminum now?

3003 I would guess or what?

Very nice 91TSI! I use .125" as well on my fuel cells. I like the idea of a fuel cell being a little stronger than it needs to be.

at 30 gallons I would seriously consider building 2 seperate tanks. 1/8 5052 material as a min for sure. we have used whiffle ***** in the past for baffling in alky for poly circle track car tanks but not sure about how they hold up with e85 a single 30 gal tank will need some baffles for sure and a good design to keep from splitting the seams

6061 using a 4043 rod. you want a little flex over strength. i agree with the .125 wall, not to mention its a lot of fun to weld.

what is the ideal type of aluminum to make a fuel cell/tank out of? ive always used 6061 and either 4043 or 5356 rod for everything ive ever made.

With my fuel cell above, I used 3003 aluminum. Here's some facts on it:
