Default B18C smokes in vtec......help me out

B18C JG Pro series head
oversize valves
Web valvetrain

B20 Bottom
JE 12:5:1 pistons
knife edged crank
eagle rods

fuel 195 walbro pump
RC 310 injecors
Mugen P28

After some major pinging on 91 octane, my timing was retarded to 12 and fp @ 44. Shortly afterwards I noticed that in vtec I was throwing out black smoke, allot! But under 5700 rpm it seems fine. The smoke occurs under wot. What can be the cause of this smoke? Timing? Also I noticed I had some oil droplets in my radiator fluid, but the compression and leak down test checked out perfectly

at night, go WOT at 2k rpms in 1st gear. If it smokes in the rear view, you can count on rings.

black smoke = running rich
blue smoke = burning oil
white smoke = burning coolant/water

don't tell this guy he has a problem with his rings.

first dyno it with a wideband O2, find out your A/F under accell, most NA cars should be ~12.5 A/F at WOT on the top end of the RPM.

here is something that you can't rule out either, just because it is black smoke, doesn't mean there isn't any blue smoke mixed in (kind of hard to see the blue mixed in with the black). so don't rule out that you might have some oil leaking into your combustion chamber, just because the blue smoke might be clouded by the black...

anyway, I haven't seen a honda that doesn't run a little rich over 6k rpm. better than running lean and slagging the pistons.

ok, so chris is smoking because coolant/water??? thats exactly the way my car smokes when i rev it. i was thinking it was the rings being a little worn out.

black smoke is rich. you need to lean it out some, get a vafc to microtune.

whoever said it is the rings deserves a

hey halo you said the car smokes in vtec that could be your valve seals. but if you have a new head then that should be good. do a comp. teston all the cyl. and start from there my car smoking crazy in vtec so i am going to pull the head and replace the valve seals. and the problem should be gone. c-ya and good luck.

The entire motor has less than 1,500 miles on it, if it is seals they sure didnh't last long It seems like all the smoke started happening when the timing got retarded to 12, I wonder if timing has anything to do with it?

I wouldn't be too concerned, I'm running a 2.25" carsound cat and just had my engine re-built about 6000km's ago. I also get some black smoke at WOT, (not enough to notice in my mirror, but i have had friends tell me there is a bit and I also notice black specks on my rear license plate).. i think this is fairly normal, especially with high flow cats.

HTH,
Adam

throw it on a dyno and get some accurate a/f read outs with a wideband.

not necessarily my friend. when i tore up two rings/pistons i was emitting white smoke ala spy hunter smoke screen style. but yea, a lil bit of black smoke is normal on hi perf. hondas, but when youre busting a black smoke screen, something is probably amiss.

i had black smoke when my oil was bad. i dont agree with the statement that oil burning is blue... thats too cut and dry.

btw, retarding yorut iming will give less time to burn fuel, so that favors the idea of your running rich.

THis is my friends experience. He rebuilt his motor, while the break in period, he would get alot of smoke at WOT. now after 3k miles there is no smoke. We figured that it was the rings because they have not properly set yet.

Im guessing since u just rebuilt your motor, u might have the same problem. BTW should you be driving ur car like a grandma anyways-since u breaking the engine in and all.
