Default Cleaned up my rear plastic windown, plastx worked great from how it was

Just got the car, has only 21,500km's on it but god that rear plastic looked horrid and I knew i had to fix it up for spring time here. Went out, bought meguiars plastx, a good micro cloth and i had another one at home.

Learnt its a bitch to even get at the windown from the inside :S

But, these results came with only 20 mins of quick work!

Before

After

hey, I was wondering if anyone had used like 600grit sandpaper on it, take a good top layer off and spray clearcoat on it? Mine can't be rescued with plastic polish. I went at it with steel wool and left surface scratches (better than the grimed on plastic) and wondered if i could dig deep enough to remove the scratches and just fill in the scratches with a good clearcoat? I'm planning on glass top anyways but figured I could guinea pig for the s2k society. (rips on the fabric)

You can't use clearcoat. When it folds, the clearcoat will crack. When it flexes because of the wind, the clearcoat will most likely fall off.

I used "fine grit" steel wool with a TON of windex for lube. Then I used plastix as a finisher. My window looks almost new.

interesting. do you have any before/after shots???

i use plastx and scratchx on mine's and in the center portion (where the plastic folds) there is a long line of dullness that will not come off no matter how much i clean it. the top has 74k on it

I unfortunately have no before shots. But it was pretty bad. Embarrasing bad.

Try the steel wool. Try it in a small part first. If you dont like the results, dont do it. Mine came out looking real nice. Just use a LOT OF WINDEX for lube...or you will scratch the plastic really bad. Use gentle hands. Random motions to cancel out swirl marks.

The film that builds up actually has a grain. Go against the grain as much as you can to get the big parts off. Then be more and more gentle to smooth out the scratches. Use plastix as a finishing step to fill in scratches and take out the small, leftover blemishes.

lol, "fine steel wool" didn't work for me(i think it was since it was dense). its just set in stained, and im guessing its been there for YEARS. i used regular steel wool and got some results, but of course.. the scratches are deeper than plastx would reverse. (still better than the dirty stained b4)

if your going to use a sand paper and start off with a 600 grit, i would then go back and then use a 800 grit and then a 1000 grit for best results...

Plastx is one of the best products ive ever used. They also work good on headlights. It removed haze and cleared up my ap2 lamps.
