i would say that you would probably have to take the control arm off, I could be wrong though. But actually holding the ball joint in place is a snap ring, you would have to take the snap ring off and it should come out.

just pull the lca ( takes like 30 min.) and take it to a shop.
we have a place here called "clutch and brake"
I did that in one of my old crxs cost me 14$ to get the old one out and press the new one in.

can you actually buy just the ball joint for your civic? i know when I replaced my right upper ball joint last year in my Civic , I could only find the full Upper Control Arm with ball joint from Honda and everyother parts store here in Canada. I didn't mind though since it made the job really easy
