Default Tranny: Cursed or Not?

So as i've notited EVERY automatic 94-97 accord i have driven never shifts smoothly very often. They are all very rough. So my question is if i swap an H22 trans. will they shift any smoother or are they cursed too???? I'm looking at getting an autostick out of a '98 or so.

Basically, all Honda auto transmissions from inception until 1999 models were designed to have a firm shift. This was to protect the clutches from premature wear. Without going into too much detail, Honda R&D bowed to customer demands that the shifting be smoother. Many different aspects of the hydraulic circuits, electrical commands and clutch disk material were changed to satisfy this demand. The early result was tragic for Honda, as abnormal clutch burn was experienced in far too many transmissions I care to comment on. This continued until the 2003 model year until minor improvements were made to clutch material. The true and final countermeasures to electrical and hydraulic circuitry were introduced in the 4-axis transmission (03 Saturn Vue), and carried into the new NP2, NP4 and current NP0-4Axis transmissions we are using today.

In a nutshell, your experience with the harsh shifting is most likely not a problem - at least from a clutch wear standpoint. If you notice it getting progressively harsher, you may need to replace a pressure switch, shift solenoid or linear solenoid.

You could always remove your separator plates and "port out" the correct oil circuits... pretty risky though if you don't know what you're doing.
