I chose to add PS to my DX EG for the quicker ratio and to help deal with the force from my Kaaz LSD and the wide tires (225 Hoosiers). I felt it was a good trade - surprisingly little weight - and now I just have to concentrate on being smooth with the steering wheel. Getting the wheel back and forth quickly enough used to be the limiting factor in slaloms, but now it is back to traction. I also had an oversized aluminum pulley machined for the pump to deal with the higher revs and to minimize any power sapping.

Been happy with the results and now its easier to recruit a FSPL co-driver (steering effort used to be so high that Jean Kinser had difficulty dealing with it).

i thought about taking mine off but decide not to. i took drives in freinds' cars who had removed thier power steering pumps and found it to take way too much energy and effort at autocross speeds. i think changing the pulley size would be a better option then removing it all together

i have a cx hatch chasis that never had powersteering from the factory. i had powersterring in my 00 coupe. i like not having powersteering. i feel in control with the wheel and where i need to put the car. BUT every drivers opinion is going to be diffrent thoe.

I actually removed the power steering in my Accord because it couldn't keep up in fast transitions, the steering wheel would always lock up when you tried to turn back real quick, after removing it never had a problem and couldn't tell any difference on course.

Unpowered the powersteering rack in our '90 Integra RS with 320mm steering wheel and there is really not that much more effort than with power steering. It's no issue on autocross course since the car is so resonsive to begin with and doesn't require much steering input even in tight turns. Less weight and more solid steering feel seems like win/win to me.

Works great on track too...

Out of curiosity.

Everybody running "looped" power steering, or a manual rack... Which tires are you guys using?

My Civic has an H22 so no ps, but has a ps rack. I used to drive a Gsr w/ ps, and share the same view as quoted.

(Internal valves removed) The tires are 205/50-15 Hankook R-S2 Z212's and most recently 225/45-15 Nitto NT-01 on track.

Mine was looped, and I had 225/45/50 V710s on 15x7 Kosies and 205/50/15 AO32Rs (i think thats what they were, it was a couple years ago) on 15x6.5 Prelude wheels. This was also in a 'heavy' Accord.

i've had the same or similiar experiance in my accord. in slow speed quick transitions it feels as though you hit a wall with the steering wheel when changing directions.

Default non P/S P/S

I've had my Ps pump for many years, very little bit of fluid in the rack. I recently figured out which lines pulled/pushed and capped one, and looped the other two, and added some syth gear oil to the rack. feels a little easier at low speeds.

I have been using 15x8 volks with 225/50/15 v710s and doing lots of solo, few thousand street miles a year (and was a daily driver for 5 years) and a few track days. I prefer the feel w/o power assist, once im rolling i dont notice the steering being difficult or slowing my responses, but it feels heavier and much more "feel" of slip angle than power assist. You could call it heavy or tough doing a 5 point turn!

I drove a friends sirrocco for a few autocrosses on 215/50/13 v710s and 13x8s, with a quaife, 5 degrees of caster and 3.5 neg camber, he preferred p/s, I thought the steering felt numb and found myself over-steering Meaning adding too much too quickly and having trouble feeling slip angle/limit, rather than having the rear end stepping out. We were still within .1 seconds of eachother though! Most autocrossers I know prefer Ps though probably a matter of what you're used to. I rather have my 2hp and better steering feel.

Right now my civic doesn't have PS. When I first started autocrossing, I felt it was difficult to turn and point the car. Now it doesn't bother me as much. Probably since I'm faster and I've just gotten used to it. I'm running 205 RT615

However next season I'm putting an Integra rack and PS setup at the recommendation of fellow SM civic. However he's running 275 Hoosiers up front.

If you're running 205 tires, you're probably fine without PS. But if you ever plan on running 275, then I think PS becomes mandatory.

Do you run with WDCR? If so I'll probably see you this year. This is going to be my first year with them. I ran a couple of AI events but I primarily ran in the CDC events.

I ran 3 events in 2006 with the following:

Quaife quick ratio steering rack guts (2.3 turns lock to lock)
EF hatch with SOHC 1.6 and OEM JDM LSD (came right from Japan)
M62 Endyn supercharger kit (was making 23+ psi at the time)
285/30-18 Hoosier R3S05
18x10.5 Kodiaks with 5.75" backspace

I have to tell you the steering was incredibly heavy. I ran the car the year before with a bunch less power, and a more normal 225/50-15 V710s on 15x8.5 Kodiaks (same backspace) and it was very driveable. I wouldn't have called the steering "light" but it was not difficult to drive. That is no longer the case. My biceps were aching after a 50 second run, and I most certainly would not say that I was driving effectively with how much effort was required to turn the wheel. I will be adding power steering for this season.
