Video Magazine ?? has there ever been one for our sport ??
well, during my sleep last night/this morning.... an idea poped into my head....
i used to be a die hard bmx kid from about the age's of 12 to 20 or so... but anyhow... i remember there were a few video magazine's that were published throuought the years. "Props" being the number 1 bmx video magzine that popped into my head... they would travel to events, get footage, do interviews, showcase new products, go around to differant skate parks, dirt jumping scenes, street riding scenes and more. they even went as far as getting a group of riders together, that traveled the US and called it "PROPS - road fools" .
those videos were awsome for the sport, in my opinion... and now i have to ask.... why have we never seen anything like this in the "sport compact" scene ??? we have people getting awsome video coverage, pictures and etc... NYCE1's comes to mind, but never really produced a "publication" on it. i have been to a handfull of events, and it would make for some good tv. and could get more people involved, if they could really see what the sport is about.....
what do you think ?

I had a video magazine company contact me during my build wanting to do a shoot with my car. It is a Subaru based mag, that includes a 90 minute DVD with each issue.
I can't remember the name of the magazine for the life of me since this was earlier in the year and I can't find the emails...haha
So I think there are some out there, but I haven't seen any for SC drag racing.

"360 video mag" was really big in the scene. I don't really know what they are up to. But I do know that they are still around and I think they have been covering drifting. You should e mail them or message them on myspace if you have one and suggest for them to get back into the import drag racing scene again. I know that they used to cover a lot of the car shows and some drag events all over the world so. You should just give them a try. They always had great coverage and cool stunts in it as well.
or contact nyce1. They do alot of photo/video shooting at most of the sport compact events. I would think that with alitte support from some of the sc companies out there, they would be able to do alot more. I would think that a dvd/mag offered maybe bi-monthly would be alot easier to undertake then a monthly mag. It would be cool if maybe a dvd/mag could be setup so that it would have interviews with racers. It would also be nice to see some features of some drag cars. It would give a chance to let everyone from the little guys in brackets to the top dogs in proclasses get there cars seen. I know alot of the print mags don't have much in the way of drag related material anymore, and when they do is usually just race updates from 3-4 months ago. Plus you could help pay for the dvd by having commericals from vendors, I know it sucks, but it would help get more promotion for our industry's vendors/companies.
I think Dave has a good idea, but I think it would take alot of help from alot of companies/individuals to really make this a reality. Don't expect any of the primedia mags to ever entertain the idea..lol. This would have to be done on a grassroots level.

I think its a great idea dave. I think it would take a lot to put together though. Probably a full time job for someone haha.
If you are really interested in it, I actually know someone who actually does a quarterly DVD magazine out of NY . I can put you ( or anyone ) in contact with her to get a better scope on prices and the run around on what it entails

Video Groove magazine FTW!!
One of my close personal friends used to hit all the races with me way back in the day. He actually released a tittle called "Underground Imports", sold a thousand or so of those and eventually got into stunk bike videos.
http://www.stuntshinestate.com <--- check out some of his features!!
He will for sure be on board to come film some east coast events with us. If there is a market for a sport compact full length DVD feature he would do it.
I don't know about a video magazine, I'd have to talk it over with him.
His latest release "Otown Throwdown" was a Orlando based feature spotlighting all of the local talent around the area... So far the movie is doing great!!

the real question is.... would people buy this dvd ?
is it worth the effort of putting such a thing together ?
if i were going to try to pull something like this off, it would have to look good and profesional, grass roots is good, but i wouldnt want it to look like some shmucks went to an event with a camera and just put it on a dvd and called it a "video mag" ...
..quite honestly, i personally dont have what it takes to pull off something of this caliber, it would have to consist of a team of people, maybe some east coast, mid west, and west coast, maybe even some non american's can help collaborate. this way it would be less travel fee's and more coverage getting on the "mag"

360 Video was imo the best video magazine out there
They dont cover drag events any longer, nor do they put out the old style videos
Now, Roland concentraes on the 'Girls of 360' series, and Phil and Robbie et al focus on the 'JDM Insider' series of videos.
That was the best produced/shot/stylized dvd covering the sport compact scene to date.
Once they secured their distribution deal, they could no longer sell the older videos... but the older ones had a lot of Battle coverage circa 1998/1999... The legendary Papadakis/Bergenholtz 9 second Battle is covered on Issue 4(I belive its #4, Ill go home and look through mine tonight)

This is a great idea that we were planning for originally. However, there were some legal issues in regards to taking footage from sanctioned events and then selling it via dvd. So we have geared our online site to do exactly what is being mentioned in this thread for absolutely free. We just ask for you all to become members and then enjoy the different types of footage that we will offer. In the coming future you will see more driver interviews, videos articles on performance shops, video product reviews and much more. You can checkout our first shop feature at http://www.nyce1s.com. It was on Inline Pro. The video to that feature will be released soon. Then a wave of different driver and shop articles will be next up so sit tight. I am sure that we will find a way to release sport compact dvd's at some time in the future. We plan to cover everyone from normal bracket racer to the top Pros. We would just like more backing from manufacturers, drivers and shop owners alike to keep it going because it can get expensive at times with all the travel and equipment costs. Sorry for the long story but I am glad to see that you all are exactly on the same page with us in regards to the types of content that you would like to see.

we all can appriciate the awsome coverage you guys have been giving us for years.
the only shortcoming to this is that you are limited to the internet. people need to know about you in order to find you (the internet is huge)
can we find a loophole or something to get around it ? id really like to see something produced and put out for all of america to see, being sold in retail stores

Thanks alot for the kind words. We are working our hardest for you guys. You are correct in regards to the internet and how huge it is. We have also used the internet to our advantage. Our drag racing videos on youtube have been watched by more than 1 million people as of early December 2007. That is a huge accomplishment for us. We are very aggressive with getting our footage out. We are on more than 100 other web forums where we post videos all the time.
We always had plans to for a video magazine via dvd but that legal issue us back from doing it for the sport compact scene. I have been working on one for the domestic scene being that they have a huge amount of 10.5 inch outlaw and drag radial competitors. The people in charge of a few events have given me the green light for the dvd project. It will start out being sold in shops across the east coast and then it will expand to other areas. If we as a company are able to generate enough sponsorship dollars via our other outlets I would like to offer a Sport Compact DVD magazine to people for absolutely free. I know that it is something that can be done. It would truly be a success.

Once agin Julian, your the f*^%$ng man. You should let everyone know what you might need. If your going to be in an area doing some 10.5 stuff, maybe you could tell everyone. There might be a shop near where your at. This way you could really hit two birds with one stone.
This has been my brain child since 03. Unfortunately it's such a niche market that it isn't lucative enough to work on. If you goto Best Buy you can find alot of "Sport Compact" Videos out there. I have had the idea of creating an online video magazine SpeedLoungeTV.com but as Julian said there is alot of legalities involved and in the end is it really worth it? None the less we love this sport and SpeedLounge.com & SpeedLoungeTV.com will continue to support SC Drag Racing for 2008!
Julian and I have had many discussions on this topic.. I truly believe that the Web is a perfect springboard to get us to the mainstream.. w/ distribution outlets like youtube / myspace / facebook a weekly or monthly 5 min podcast or video w/ great content and what I think is crucial is a "Dynamic Personality" we need someone that could host a weekly show etc.. that has charisma etc.. then we have the chance of some of these large sanctioning bodies partnering w/ us..
I have a feeling all the hardwork that Julian has put in over the years will really pay off this year!

Happy New Years H-T!

i belive something of this stature is completly feasible, being the peoples involved in producing the "mag" have some good backing. obviously from the sactioning bodys, manufactures, performance shops. etc. each would then get their own "air time" on the mag, wether it be monthly, quarterly, bi annual or what have you. how much air time would reflect on how "supportive" they are toward the "mag" i dont think sport compact drag racing, or even sport compact enthusiasts are going to fall off the face of the earth tommorrow. its not like the "mag" has to specifcly be about drag racing, this can include drifting, and a whole lot more, it will add content to the "mag" and alot more people will be "more knowing" toward eachothers sport or hobby, this could be good or bad, i guess it depends how everyone feels about what the content should involve. lets face it, the 10 seconds of air time on national tv aint doing **** for the sport. we gotta take it back....
i really would like to see something like this happen.
look at what some of the "pro" drag teams do... such as Central FLorida Turbo, and World Racing, these guys produce some of the best videos' ive seen.. from pulling all nighters @ the track, dyno time, shop "funnies".. you name it, these guys got it... and their video's are awsome to boot !

Def.. We need to put match a "Personality" w/ the stars that are out there competing.. that way rivalry's can be built through this etc.. and the behind the scenes stuff would be huge in really solidifying that we are "For Real"

for the mass market to Pay for a video DVD? I dont think so. Even online subscriptions isnt going to work. If the information is on the web, people arent willing to pay for it.
Now, Dsport is doing a DVD every few issues or so and is including them in the magazine. I dont remember their subscription prices, but maybe around $25 for a whole year and thats probably going to include at least a couple DVDs per year. Good deal in my opinion.
For someone to really do a Video magazine, the only way it would be profitable is if it was available to be downloaded for a fee. No DVD and postage costs. the target age group would be 16-25, if the cost would be close to a magazine like $4-6 per video, it would be affordable.
