Default Buying 98 Accord EX - Timing Belt advice needed

Hi,

Brand new to the forum. My Dad has offered to sell me his 98 Accord EX w/ 145k for about 2 grand. It's a 4cyl Auto. The timing belt has never been replaced and he's recommending I get this done. I've read that you should also have the water pump replaced at the same time. What other components should I have checked/replaced at this point?

What kind of cost am I looking at when having a dealer do this repair?

I do have some mechanical abilities but I think this job is a bit too involved for me.

Any advice you could provide would be helpul.

Thanks

Rob

The timing belt was scheduled to be changed after seven years or 105,000 miles, so it is overdue. And yes, you would normally have the water pump changed at the same time since it has to be removed anyway.

Cost from a dealer will be around $700 or $800? Call them and ask, I haven't actually done it yet on my '99 LX. Also call some other dealers within 30 miles or so, this may be one of those items where each dealer will be giving you a different price.

And of course, if you know of any good independent mechanics, get quotes from them too.

if that thing breaks you are fuxxored. it should have been done at 105K. Honda = interference engine and thing will get bent like valves or pistons get holes punched into them if that thing breaks at hwy speeds

check my write-up in the FAQ.

- Timing Belt
- Timing Balancer Belt
- Power Steering Belt
- Alternator/Compressor Belt
- Water Pump
- Front Balance Shaft Retainer Kit
- Valve Cover Gasket Kit
- Timing Belt Adjuster (Tensioner) - Inspect/Replace if needed
- Timing Balancer Belt Adjuster (Tensioner) - Inspect/Replace if needed
- Timing Belt Adjuster Spring
- Timing Balancer Belt Adjuster Spring
- Camshaft Oil Seal
- Crankshaft Oil Seal
- Hondabond High-Temp Silicone Gasket Sealant - Use when installing valve cover gasket

Also, a job like this is going to cost to have this done. If you choose to go to a corner auto shop make sure they are using OEM Honda parts. And like mentioned above, call around as it seems like people have gotten/paid various amounts from dealer to dealer for this job to be done.
