Fuel Filter Install
Hey fellas,
I just searched but couldnt find a how-to on a fuel filter install
for a 1997 civic ex.
So I bought the fuel filter, also some fuel system cleaner.
I basically filled up my car, put the cleaner in gas tank, gonna
drive 100mi. before putting in new fuel filter. (What you guys think
about this method, car has 123k mi. on the original fuel filter)
I was wondering if I could do this install myself without any special
tools? A mechanic once told me before that special tools were required.
I just payed for a clutch install so if possible I would like to do this one
myself.

i am not sure where fuel filter located on the ek civic. but i did replaced fuel filter for my eg a while ago.it is located at the firewall..what i did is .depressurized the fuel tank, loose the fuel filter bracket and loose two nuts/bolts and installation is just reverse of removal. it is a easy job. but time consuming and removing the nuts/bolts on the fuel filter can be pain in the ***. took me a while to loose them

Yea it seems to be up at the firewall just to the left of the engine.
I have no idea what depressurizing the fuel tank is. I was looking for
maybe a step-by-step how to on the whole process and tools needed.

just open your fuel door and open that **** thats what i did first. (just like u are going to gas station and pump the gas)
and i loose two nuts/bolts on top of fuel fitler first..
then i loose the fuel filter bracket, there is a bolt holding the brakcet.
and i took out two nuts/bolts on top of fuel filter and got it out
installation is the reverse of removal. pm me if u have any more questions

Yeah, just crack open the gas cap.
You can PM me if you have any questions, it's pretty straight forward, I do mine like once or twice a year though, I also have an "EK" - '97 EJ8.

Yeah, just crack open the gas cap.
You can PM me if you have any questions, it's pretty straight forward, I do mine like once or twice a year though, I also have an "EK" - '97 EJ8.
open gas cap, unbolt bottom fuel line and then top, unbolt the clamp holding it on, reverse the steps.
difference between ek and eg filters: ek's are on a an angle and the car side fuel line is on the bottom
difference between ek and eg filters: ek's are on a an angle and the car side fuel line is on the bottom

well my friend and i changed his one time we relieved the pressure a different way we just pulled the fuse to the fuel pump and started the car first .. the car should die very quickly this way you just relieved all the pressured fuel in your lines .. i never tried just opening the gas door

Do you guys notice a performance difference doing it
that often?? I've had this original fuel filter in the car for 11 years,
and my gas mileage is barely below epa.

no performance gains. justa bit better gas mileage. plus clean fuel burns easier.

I dunno, I read that DIY and it seems complicated, and long.
I don't trust myself with the fuel system.
If anyone is gonna be around the D.C. metro area (I'm in

The guy that wrote the DIY was like, "it took 1-2 HOURS LESS" than the fuel
filter installs for other cars. We talking multiple hours here, wtf??

wtf? 1~2 hours to replace fuel filter. took me 30 mins.
dude i am not a car machenic but i tear up my civic completely and put it back together. did the engine swap a couple of times. rebuild the engine, did all the suspension/brake job by myself at my home garage. so .

Yea but if that guy is saying that the civic fuel filter install took 1-2 Hrs. LESS than the fuel filter installs for other vehicles, then its taking him multiple hours to do it on the civic.
I haven't taken apart an engine or did swaps myself before, the whole "fuel spattering all over the place" is what scares me.

You will want a LINE WRENCH/FLARENUT to loosen the fuel lines where they meet the fuel filter. I don't believe anyone's mentioned that yet, but IMO it's a must because if you strip the fuel lines where they meet the filter you are 100% fuucked.
I don't have a 96-00 Civic here at my shop to check the size, but if you take a standard wrench and see what size you need (might be 12mm or 14mm?) just buy a line wrench in the correct size.
A line wrench has extra contact surface with the nut/fitting on the brake hard line and makes it impossible to strip it, unlike regular open-ended wrenches.
You round off a fuel line and the job will go from 15 minutes to a nightmare once you see how the fuel line is installed! It runs all the way under the car back to the tank!

Here's an idea of what the end looks like on the desired wrench - DISREGARD THE SIZE!!! YOU WILL NEED A METRIC WRENCH SIZE!!!
I don't have a 96-00 Civic here at my shop to check the size, but if you take a standard wrench and see what size you need (might be 12mm or 14mm?) just buy a line wrench in the correct size.
A line wrench has extra contact surface with the nut/fitting on the brake hard line and makes it impossible to strip it, unlike regular open-ended wrenches.
You round off a fuel line and the job will go from 15 minutes to a nightmare once you see how the fuel line is installed! It runs all the way under the car back to the tank!

So the new fuel filter, 2 things were different about it than the
original. First, the bottom nut with the threads in it was at least
twice as long on the new fuel filter as the old. I dunno if this
is an issue it seemed to bolt in fine. Also, when you look in from
the top of the new fuel filter there was a crome looking thing
covering the space close to the top of the hole, while the old one
seemed dark and hollow inside. Any thoughts?
