Default no valve cover gasket?

hey guys. took the valve cover off my civic today and came to find out that it had no gasket. just bare aluminum on aluminum. i'm pretty sure that's not normal. Is it normally a metal gasket or just a silicone gasket? either way, it had no gasket. now i'm beginning to wonder just how much other crap is wrong with the motor. feel free to chime in. i'm all ears!

thanks. but it didn't look to have oil all over. maybe it had just enough rubber on it? anyways, i definitely think a rebuild is on hand. i've never built a motor, let alone work on one extensively so once i get into it, i'll need a lot of help from u honda tech experts.... experts is a relative term. is there a rebuild guide on honda-tech for b-series? if so, i'd love a link to it.

you sure the gasket isn't just stuck in the groove of the valvecover and looks like part of the cover? they're both black, so if you've never seen one it might look that way.
