Default No more GM Synchromesh Friction Modified!

*edit* This post is about the Friction Modified version of GM's Synchromesh. It is NOT about the regular Synchromesh fluid, either from GM or from Pennzoil

Yup. Called up my buddy yesterday at the big local Chevy dealer, looking for some Friction Modified Synchromesh before I pull my engine out. He brought out 3 quarts of the regular Synchromesh, and told me that the Friction Modified version is being phased out.

So I took the regular stuff, and then just as I got down the street aways he called me back and said he found some Friction Modified fluid.

So I went back and decided to buy all 6 quarts they had left, for the most excellent price of $51

So I guess if you use it and want to keep using it, or if you've been wanting to try it, you better call around to your local GM dealers and try to stock up now before they get rid of it.

A little history: I've been using GM Synchromesh Friction Modified fluid in my GS-R transmission for about 100,000 miles now, changing it about every 25K miles or so. My transmission has 260K+ total miles on it, still with all original internals, and it still shifts flawlessly, even with my short shifter, and even in single-digit temperatures on cold mornings. It is by far the best fluid I've ever used.

Mods I'm cross-posting this in several forums so that everyone will see it.

Wait, isnt there only one kind of GM Syncromesh? Could you elaborate please? I am currently running that in my tranny, but will be swapping it out before the next autox season starts.

Pennzoil Synchromesh Friction Modified? Or Pennzoil Synchromesh? SM FM isn't the same as SM.

As far as GM phasing out SM FM, the way they've been going, GM may phase out GM in a few years.

x1000. The price of it isn't worth the lack of benefit

I bought a beat transmition, back when i was in high school. Did not have enoughf money to rebuilt it. So GM pretty much was a bandage for my tranny for 3 years.

Sorry, I phrased that badly.

I'm questioning whether the Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid, the one that people are stating is readily available, is just a replacement for regular GM Synchromesh fluid, or if it's a SM FM formula.

Pennzoil's stuff replaces the regular GM SM. It IS NOT the same as the Friction Modified stuff.

I just read over in the ITR forum of a couple of people using Pennzoil's stuff during track day, in an ITR and an RSX-S and it sucked bad in both of those cars. They switched to GM SM Friction Modified and it was worlds better.

Any idea on why it's being phased out? Is something else coming in to replace it?

I think the new and recent GM cars just don't call for that fluid anymore.

I know a guy with a 98 Vette 6 MT and he said the manual tranny takes ATF and the diffy takes 75w90 gear oil. So no Corvette in the last 10 years has called for that fluid.

A manufacturer is only required to keep parts in stock for vehicles up to 10 years old. I think some of the S-10 pickups with manual trannies in the 90's used GM SM FM, but those are approaching 10 years old now.
