Default SFWD, no CRX's why?

How come so few of you guys are running CRX's i find it odd since theyre so light and you can fit a k or b in there as well, maybe im missing the point, but is it due to aftermarket support or is there another reason?

cramped engine space for one is a BIG issue plus chassis options are better suited for the EG/DC arena

The first car(s) that started the whole "SPFWD" class IMO were CRX's, J Hunts CRX was about the badest street car I can remember from the late 90's early 2000's. He went 9.5's with that car. so I for sure think you can be competitive with chassis. There is for sure more backing for the 92-00 civic's. However I think the class is really about being different. Civic HB. Coupes, Integra's, Neon's, SRT-4's, Scion's, etc..... I think if your thinking about building a SPFWD CRX you should just go for it! There may not be a bandwagon to ride around on with it. But that doesn't mean you can't be competitive with it

i think its the wheelbase of the chassis.

i'd guess wheel base, cramped engine bay, difficulty to find a clean, unmolested chassis may be a big factor

Finding a chassis without a hole in the floor is one reason. The other is that the "mint" condition ones go for about an arm and a leg.

well i don't think you are entirely correct...

..what happens is people turn their daily driven and legitimate street cars into the race cars for the class.

most people have EG's, DC's and EK's and thus those are the ones you see turned into race cars per say. It is the natural evolution...someone has a EG...does and engine swap...puts a turbo kit on it...makes more power....runs slicks....cage to meet the local track rules...more extreme to keep up the class...etc, etc

there are still CRX's on the street but the vast majority of people daily driving cars like this are in a EG, DC, or EK

Yep, that was me... i do still have the chassis and front end. i'm glad i got out of that when i did. Its unfortunate though, the car would have had a lot of potential, but i got tired of spending money like that.. haha! I have other things much more meaningful to put my money into. I'm anxious to see what happens with this sanctioning body thing, and how it settles out. thats a huge reason why i stopped building the car... virtually no 'help' from the sanctioning bodies... no one wanted RACING, they just wanted to have a (small) handful of record breakers. This isn't land speed racing, its drag racing... its about who wins the race that weekend, not who breaks the record. no one wanted to slow the class down in order to have good racing. <shrug>

Whoops, getting OT there...

The CRX is a nice platform, and there is nothing wrong with the engine bay size... yea, you have to get a little bit more creative with things, but hey, thats what fabrication and ingenuity are all about, right? Its not THAT small... The wheelbase would help a lot, but its like anything... sure, one thing may help the car go faster, but what is the rest of your setup doing? Have you figured out how to launch and shift yet? Well if not, then the long wheelbase chassis won't help anything... it may be a bit of a bandaid, but thats it.

The CRX is such a great little car, that i just bought another one to mess with may build something along the lines of a radial-class car with it.

CRX's FTW!

And if you reallly like CRX's... http://www.crxcommunity.com yea, shameless plug....

Less engine bay room maybe, and the fact that weight does not really matter much since there is still a minimum weight you can weight anyways, so you will still have to be the same weight as the EG/EK guys etc.

It's a customer's CRX. He purchased all new body panels. Had the car repainted. Since the pictures he has install an MSD Pro-Billet, 10 point cage and boost controller. On 11lbs reach roughly 13lbs by 9500RPM it made 392whp. That was wastegate. We're trying to get him in Saturday for more pump gas tuning. He is just learning the car on pump gas until the new fuel system and slicks are in Your CRX is very nice. Any more pictures of it or the setup?

I've always been a fan of CRXs and would love to build one for SFWD, but I've had the same EG for a while now. I think the the access to decent EG/DC chassis' are a bit better as well.

CRX/EF chassis have no room to fit a good turbo set-up for a competitive SFWD car. None of the top mounts/equal length manifolds that are "shelf" fit at all, let alone trying to fit a large turbo like the 42r/s372. We raced in SFWD this past season and had tons of obstacles to overcome to fit a somewhat competitive turbo set-up on the car. Getting everything to fit was a huge task, and was probably one of the hardest cars that i have had to work on/fabricate. We were forced to run a kart radiator to clear the turbo set-up, and had to push the car through the pits, staging lanes and into the burn-out box so that it would not overheat (major PITA!). It is a great chassis, super light weight and you can put the weight were you want. We were 350 lbs under the SFWD 2400lb weight limit with driver and had to add ALOT of weight back into the car. Here are some pics from this past season:

Jeff do you feel that running the cast manifold hurt you at all powerwise?

not putting words in anyone's mouth but i remember reading somewhere - that he said his set up made 900+ so i dont think power was a problem in that car lol

The power difference is probably 20-30whp peak, but not running a divided manifold was what really hurt midrange. We were only running an 87mm crank, so full boost was 7000-7400 rpm range (30-40psi). Overlaying some of my customers 42r divided manifold set-ups with large cams showed 1000-1500rpms better spool/midrange. Andrea could not lift when shifting, or the boost was drop out really bad. Our trap speeds were similar to others in the class running the 42r, so power was right there with what others were making.

we saw the exact same thing with bens car with the 42r and inline manifold. peak power was in the right area for the parts, just spooled up lazy compared to divided set ups.

on a smaller turbo set up i have gone from a similar style cast manifold to a full race manifold and saw over 40whp gain? who knows. combination is everything.

also bens car likes vtec much higher than a car with a tubular manifold.
