Civic Vx rims with slicks
Your catching on...
Even back in my day, you wanted the rim as wide as the tire. I know that is not always the way it is done.
The idea is to give the tire the ability to use all of it's width.
I seem to remember some of would even go use a wider rim to try and get the tire to flatten out more.
Last season rota's M/T's would lay over and gain about 1.5" of width. They were mounted on the correct size wheel. It's just the design of the tire that allows it to do that.

each slick has its recommended rim width. You cant always get the EXACT rim width needed for each tire so the best bet is to at least keep it within 1.5" of the recommended rim width for that slick.
The contact is affected if youre not on the proper rim size. 8" wide tire on a 5.5" wide rim, is just too much. thats a good 2.5" and what it will do, depending on the tire pressure you are at is the contact patch on the tire will change. You may only be grabbing on 50% of the center of the tire and you're not getting the best performance out of it.
Best bet, get a good matching rim.
