Sounds like you have an HX.

The best bang for your buck mod for a D series is a B series (if you want to maintain factory reliability, and driveability/options).

I wouldn't bother too much with making the Y5 faster. I usually just dont do the D series dance, however.

You can use any hydro 92-00 D series transmission.

The Si versions have the best gearing. The EX is a runner up. The DX/LX sucks. The CX/VX sucks even more.

You might gain 10hp? Iduno. If you can find a head in good shape for cheap, it wouldn't be bad.

Too much trouble/cost for 10hp, IMO. I would just leave it alone if I didn't wanna swap it.

Why do you like single cams more than DOHC?

Swap it and boost it or swap it. The y5 is quite possibly the worst d-series motor you could have in a 6th generation civic.

If you want to stay SOHC I would say to follow B serious advice on the tranny and maybe pick up a y8 as well. DOHC would be your best bet for more speed with minimal maintenance, but do whatever is best for your wallet.
