Default Transmission gurus please check in! Transmission locked in 5th gear.

Well my B16 transmission is really giving me problems I have tried everything I can think of and still have not isolated the problem so I am hoping there are some knowlegable transmission ppl in here.

It all started on my visit home for my birthday and its like a 75mile trip i got nearly home and came to a stop. Got going went through all the gears and finally got to 5th gear. Cruisin down the highway go to downshift to slow down behind a slow car. When i try to do this it will not go into gear nor any other gear. Then i noticed when i put it in the nuetral position it is still in 5th gear so anytime the clutch is out i am in 5th gear. So i keep going and eventually get to a stop and go to see if it will go into any gears turns out with it stopped i can get it into any gear i want. But it will stall if i try to go ...At that point i was assuming every position was 5th gear but i ended up puting it in the 5th gear position and slipping the hell out of the clutch to get home. So upon further inspection i have concluded it is stuck in 5th gear so when i put it in any other gear it locks up being that 2 gears are engaged. So i get home and get to looking at all the obvious places the linkage is fine the shifter is fine i drain the fluid and notice that less than a quart drains out. So i attempt to put it in and out of gear and still it will not disengage 5th gear even in nuetral. So i get the transmission out and crack it open and So far i have come across nothing out of the ordinary just by looking at it. I have not checked any of the clearances or anything yet just due to time but i have tried to find anything broken obviously anything bent but everything seems normal. it seems as though the gear selector (not sure of the exact term) that goes over the syncros and engages the gears is free to move fine but no matter its position 5th gear still seems engaged. Is that even possible?

I am sorry for the long post but if you have any input on the subject please share i am in a huge bind and cannot really afford another transmission unless absolutely necessary. And as nothing seems catastrophic it would seem fixable.

EDIT:

Do you have any pictures of your 5th gear assemble?
without the 5th gear cover on?

I am Norwegian and dont know every US words but I can try to ask in a correct grammar , but one thing passed my mind..

If the fifth gear is locked, and no matter what u do it is still locked, are you shure the shaftpin that is holding the shift fork to the 5gear syncro match(allowing to shift in to fifth) hassent come loose? I have never seen or heard that in a Honda transmission but I have opened 5 diffrent Peugeot transmissions in 2 weeks becouse of that.

If the lock pin has popped out, and the 5gear is engaged, you can shift in to 4th but the trasmission will block itself,(Nice when you are torqing down gearnuts
but not so nice when driving around....

that was one thing we were looking for but i havent found any evidence of that. The shift fork is very secure on the shaft. I planned on actually punching out the pin and making absolutely sure.

Just go ahead and pull the tranny out, might be overkill if its a shift rod problem but if its not the trans has to come out anyway... pull it out and see if it will go through the gears on the bench also spin the input shaft when its in each gear. This is the most thorough way to diagnose it... you should be able to pull it out without removing the engine with just hand tools and a jack by yourself in 2 hours or less.

I have already pulled it out and have inspected it a little. I have a better idea of what i am looking for now but at first glance everything seems normal and seems to work normal. But yeah thats what i am in the process of doing.

you can stick a screw driver in the hole the shift rod connects to and shift the tranny, if it shifts fine and the trans spins the axles when in gear and the input shaft is turned then it should be fine... but just in case use a coffee filter and drain the fluid and check for metal shavings. Now check you shift rods for unusual bends or broken or melted bushings or missing bolts.

Well i found the problem. The 5th syncro hub, sleeve, spring, ring and gear were all locked together in one big mess. Most of the pieces were able to be seperated but the 5th gear and syncro ring remain as one. I assume it ran low on fluid and got heated over the long drive. Also I am worried the mainshaft has beein ruined as well because the 5th gear slid right off with little effort. So basically now I just need some advice. Here are my options.

1: Buy a used LS transmission probably end up paying 350-400 bucks.

2: Buy 5th gear (main and countershaft) for LS as well as all the parts that are worn . Hoping the main shaft is still ok. costing around 250-300 in parts.

3: Replace the worn parts with the normal B16 parts. 200-250 in parts

4: insert option here

I really am unsure what I am going to do so if you feel like posting please do I could use any advice.

Also, on every parts site I see the syncro set (for 5th gear only i am assuming) sold for like 140 bucks. Is that what they go for everywhere? or am i looking at the wrong thing.

like i said, when mine did it i had to have it towed home,it was locked tighter than a virgin school girl on prom night. i filled it up with oil pushed the clutch in and let it run then finally forced it out of gear. once it came out it worked perfect. i sold it and the guy is still driving it to day, probably 2 years now. any way i think the shaft will be fine. just get all the pieces seperated and inspect them for scoring or discoloration

Ok i have determined the only things needing replacement will be the actual syncro ring and the 5th gear so i think i am going to go ahead and just fix this transmission making sure all the seals are replaced so i am not leaking and do this again.

I have one last question. I am ordering the LS 5th gear set from acuraoemparts.com and i was curious if the LS main shaft ball bearing is the same as the b16. This would save me from shipping from two different sources since they dont sell b16 parts.

Oh and i am having a hard time tracking down syncros for a single gear. Am i looking for something that doesnt exist?
