Default I just learned how to drive a manual...

I bought a stock 97 civic EX not too long ago and I'm trying to get a feel for the car. I'm wondering if it is safe/or "good" to go past 4k rpm before I shift to the next gear. Also how will I know if Vtec is engaged. I don't think I ever engaged it before. My car also "chokes" when I down shift, is that normal or am I releasing the clutch too early?

Sorry for such newbie questions... I just want to know how to drive first before I do anything to the car...

Strike a pose! How nice. A $100,000 13 second car with a whole sick-*** 243RWHP . . .

Shift it wherever you want up until you get to the red part of the tach. You won't hurt anything other than fuel economy before that point.

VTEC - Engages between 4000 and 5000RPM whether you like it or not. It REALLY isn't all that impressive - ESPECIALLY on a SOHC EX. Unless you have a louder exhaust you won't even notice it. Contrary to popular belief it isn't like a turbo spooling up or anything.

In b-4 da lock y0!

VTEC only engages when you go from redline in 4th and jam it in 2nd.

It should sound like a series of bangs and pops... it's a little disturbing at first but when you get it right... it's sick.

Ummmm, what else can be said?

I'm taking bets on when this baby gets locked. I say around 11:00 a.m. EDT; that's about the time Chris wakes up and starts checking things...

Actually, yes. I used to practice by using my mom's kidneys as pedals, and I would shift my umbilical cord.....

You should have seen the OB/Gyn's face when I drove myself home from the hospital!

Money and talent -- that's all that's holding me back.

Geez, people - give the guy a break. It's like his first post and at least he is asking rather than just beating up his hardware...

Where the "choking" thing is concerned, you need to try to match the RPMs of the engine in the lower gear to the road speed of the car. You will generally need between 600 and 900 additional revs when you shift down one gear. You might try to find some of the posts on heel-and-toe downshifting and start to learn how to do that...

Good luck and sorry for the unkind responses above.

Kirk
