Default throwing a VSS code

i got a 96 civic ex and im throwing a P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit Malfunction code but my speedo still works. Can my vss still be bad even though my speedo works? Need to get this check engine light cleared so i can pass inspection.

Take your VSS off and inspect the contacts, Clean them. Then unplug negative battery cable for a few minutes and see if it clears the code.

The VSS is ontop of the transmission.

yea even though the speedo is working doesnt mean that the sensor is working properly the ecu looks for a certain reference voltage from the sensor and if its setting the light then the sensor is reporting to the ecu properly, and i also use to be a state inspector, they cannot fail your car for a anti-lock brake light being on unless the red brake light is on in conjunction with it if they are telling you otherwise then contact the state police. pm me if u need anymore info.
