94 Accord, F22BI, AT, VTEC - Solenoid questions
I noticed this vehicle has these aluminum canisters on it - The two AT ones on the RAD side and there is one near the EGR Valve. Can someone give me a brief 101 background on these canisters:
What they do ?
What is inside them ?
Are they simple or complex devices?
Are they serviceable? If yes, what do I do and how do they come apart?
Are they lubed or dry inside?
Can they be damaged by messing with them? ... I used some Steel Wool, 3M scotch Brite Pads, and some emery cloth to clean the outside. Can the static electricity generated from that type of cleaning harm them?
Btw, they seem to rust up rather quickly on the outside.
I have the Helms Manual and a Haynes.
I saw where member P Adams says to clean the screens. I got this vehicle (first Honda) a few years back and have been slowly restoring it for use as daily general driver vehicle [no ricey mods being done]. I have not yet replaced the Alt brushes or tested the alt. I have not messed with the main relay. I have not check'd the wiring under the dash but have looked at the fuses [ok]. I also never poked around the tranny console area yet for obvious signs like gummed up connectors, from spilled sodas, etc., or for corrosion issues. Will get to that later.
I have put about $1.5k into the car so far. It still needs driveaxles, and a fuel filter, and an EGR port cleaning.
Still has the T Stat from when I got the car, but the T. gauge works fine. I will probably at least take it out and clean it up.
The one thing I would like to do is clean the sensor tips off, like the Coolant Temp Sensor. Not sure if it can be cleaned or if that makes any difference. It never seemed to harm any other vehicle when I cleaned off the buildup [usually white or green deposits].

the fuel solenoid next to the egr (cannister thingy) has 1 green wire coming out of it plug it to the negative side of your coil wirer (the black 1 all alone) it neads to go up and down with ur rpms. for fuel preassure or u will prbly b able to rev 2 about 3500 -4000 and it will go blah. until u let off the throttle

Do NOT listen to this advice. Regardless of the fact that his answer has nothing to do with your questions, no one can figure out what the hell this guy is talking about. Possible troll.
diyer,
any pics of the canisters in question? It's been a while since I looked at a 5th gen Accord engine bay.

Yea, the vtec solenoid (located next to the distributor and not far from the egr) likes to rust up a bit. Cleaning it with those pads won't hurt it. It's kind of like an oil pressure switch. There is oil inside it and when you take the whole solenoid assembly off the side of the cylinder head, there is a rubber gasket and a mesh screen to catch debris. Mine had 226k miles on it and had nothing caught in the mesh. Are you talking about the air conditioning system when you refer to the aluminum canister? Thanks
Thank you, too philadd.
