D16 turbo engine build shopping list help newbie here
hey guys, i am a total newbie to building engines.
i wanted to know what you guys recommend to get for a build up with great prices.
so far i have been reading vitara piston is the way to go with eagle rods.
i wanted to do the whole thing with heads, cams, rods, pistons, etc. please point out anything that would be missing. i already have a T3 turbo already.
my goal is just to build up a strong and sage D16a6 motor, with whatever hp i get out of it.
its a daily car. trying to keep it under 1k $ if thats even possible.
i plan on getting everything new and not used.
edit:
budget has now moved up. not sure yet as i have no idea what it will fully cost at this point.
i will modify the list as i get replies back. i will also be replacing anything that i can while the engine is open.
if you have any idea what the pricing is for the items you are posting please let me know.
(est pricing)
list:
timing belt 50.00
oil pump 100.00
water pump 100.00
alternator 100.00
vitara piston ???
eagle rods ????
walbro fuel pump 70.00

You're going to have to do a lot more homework.
BTW...initial budgets never work because the small stuff is usually forgotten. You also have to pay someone to put the motor together since you clearly stated you are a noob at building engines. Do yourself a big favor, stick to stock for now until you can build this engine on your own or until you have the money to pay a shop to build and tune it for you.
Good Luck

thanks for the advice.
the main reason i am doing this is because i was told one of the piston seals may be out. the car is running really crappy and seems to be burning oil. the thought at the moment was, since i am getting this thing opened up why not just spend a bit more to have it modded up.
normally i was just going to keep it running as it is. it gave enough power to keep me happy. then one day everything just hit me.
my temp gauge went out the same exact day my fan on my radiator went out. the car was over heating as i was driving home. i noticed smoke while in the freeway. i could not tell if it was a busted oil or water line. for just a few moments the temp jumped up. it went straight to redline on the temp gauge. i was screwed. it was in the middle of the night and i was only a few more miles to the nearest exit so i kept heading home. i knew i was screwed either way becuase i had been going for a few miles already. i just limped it back trying to keep the heater on and keeping it very slow while getting home. well now the simptoms are showing.
thats my story.
its my dd and i really need this to work again. ill need some help figuring what parts and where to get them so i can pricing it out more correctly.
anyone know prices and places to get the stuff i need?

rather than dig yourself a deeper hole by buying parts and trying to fix your current busted engine, i would suggest you pick up a d-series swap from someone in the for sale forum, or go to hmotors.com and buy a sohc zc swap. That way, you can just swap the engine in a day or 2, and then you have a builder engine that you can take your time with. Another cost you forgot to factor in is the machining that will be required to make your head and block flat again after you *probably* warped it overheating your engine to get home.. thats easily several hundred dollars and a week or more of down time. a used engine from hmotors is only like $400, and if you get the right one, it would be plug and play..
Its just a thought..
as far as getting stuff for cheap, you can't really do it in a hurry. The easiest way is to check out the for sale forum every day for like 2 months to try and pick up the parts you need from someone else who got in over their head. I am sure there are a few b-swappers on this board who have old d-series engines laying around that they will let go for the cost of shipping.. so keep your eyes peeled.

first off the best thing you should do is a goal list. this way you have a guideline of what you are trying to achive and the best path to do it.
it should contain the set hp level you want and timeslip. next is do you want it to be fast or reliable. you cant have 100% of both.
dealing with the d16a6 limits to your parts availabilty. if you switch to a vtec head or motor you may broaden this build alot.
sohcs dont take much to make decent power. a true buget build in my eyes for you is:
d16a6
tuner toys rods $250
vitara pistions $120
oem/acl bearings $100
cleaned stock a6 head/or cleaned stock vtec head
ebay turbo kit with a t3 super 60 $5-600
dsm 450cc injectors $50
tuned on crome.
oem full gasket kit $100
water pump $30
t-belt $20
thats about as cheap as it gets without ghetto rigging everything.
hope this helps

hey thanks bro.
well i like your list.
i already have a turbo on it. its working and is installed.
i am not looking to vtec. i do like the sohc cause of the parts being a bit cheaper. i am not looking to be super fast. just more reliable and fun. looking to be able to floor it and not worry ill blow something up or throw something out.
i am avoiding doing it "ghetto". i am able to up my voucher a bit more but i dont want to spend more then what i paid for the car originally. it kinda didnt look right to me, ya know?!??
as one of the items you listed i was looking into a performance timing belt. is it worth it to get a named performance timing belt? if they make one...
do you know also know who can do the heads? i wanted to be able to rev higher. just preference. kinda fun to me i guess. for no other real reason. i did see you posted up your recommendation but i am very interested in heads that is rated higher. so any recommendation to any places that does affordable work. please feel free to point it out.
thanks again.

i dont think they have a performance belt for a sohc. if they do its pointless for you because your not putting down any real power. oem is the way to go as far as timming belts go. do a quick serch of the sfwd cars and you'll see wat i mean
if you want to rev higher you'll need springs and retainers. and after that you'll still only be able to rev to 7k. stock vtec heads can be revd to 7.5k built maybe 9k. on your a6 head you'll spend 300 in just parts and still wont make any power passed 6.5. switching to a vtec head you'll make more power and rev higher. kinda best of both worlds

exactly what i was hoping to be in!!
didnt want to go over board with too many engine mods that will give more reasons to give me trouble. my worst fear is to be stranded on a car i hope will be very reliable.
that is why i am going to try to keep most of the other stuff stock oem new replaced parts.
i also found an aftermarket performance distributor cap and rotor. i think it comes with rotor. not too sure if its worth it.

It's a gates racing belt.Same company who makes the greddy and other similar belts so it is quality. I hate it when people assume everything that's on ebay is garbage. You do know that lots of h-t sponsors have ebay stores right? I just bought a blox tps sensor, skunk 2 magnetic drain bolts, and rad cap from jhpusa's ebay store but it must be garbage because it's on ebay and not through their website.Even though ebay attracts hundreds of thousands of more potential customers
Your right though, The OEM belt is proven to 450+hp on sohc motors so why buy something more expensive and waste money. Use the money you save for your build.

marketing wise it makes sense for them to sell on ebay. but their prices don't change much from the site. gates might make the belt for greddy or whomever but greddy doesn't sell the belt because...? reguardless oem is the way to go

Everything is easy to find if u put ur mind to it??!! haha.. u should really think about ur engine management.. RC injectors? hondata s300.. because u dont want ur engine to blow with so much air and not enough fuel. there is nothing wrong with ebay parts liek intercooler and piping, but BOV and turbo is not a good thing to buy from there bcuz they dont last a long time
You can find the tuner toy rods here
http://tunertoys.zoovy.com/
d16z6tcrx has been helpfully enough. 5 seconds of google searching tuner toys would have found that, its the second or third hit.
