So my car has been acting funny. All my power drains from somewhere while im driving. My battery and Alternator just goes dead and i get stuck. When i jump it it runs then when i take the cables off it dies again a few minutes later. I already but a new battery and alternator but i'm thinking somethings wrong with the charging system. Help Please!!

 

Sounds like the alternator is bad. Try taking it to Autozone or pull the alt. off and have them test it.

 

i just changed the alternator yesterday and got a new battery and it still dies. I don't knwo what to really do. i can't drive it there because i can barely even leave my driveway! So frustrating right now

 

its some sort of a bad connection from the battery to the alternator, sounds like a bad wire/cable

 

Sounds rather stupid, but do you have an alternator belt lol ? Did this happen out of the blue?

Yeah i have a belt haha. And no i probaly need to double check the grounds but i'm not sure where all the points are at.Sorry for the noob question. I was gonna check the volts at idle with the voltometer.

 

Yeah, i'm positive there is a loose wire around there somewhere.

 

Okay i'm gonna check tomorrow. So where should i look for the wire? I'm probaly gonna start from the battery to the alt, then around the cd player and my navigation system. This did kinda happen outta the blue. wpuld you guys think anything else is wrong?

 

check all the grounds, and anything you monkeyed with cause you prolly caused it on accident

do you have any check engine codes? It may be you ELD

 

Well i checked the volts on my battery when i was charging it. 13 on the battery and 13 on the alternator. so im pretty sure those are still good. check the grounds and there good. I looked at the battery wires and they seem good. Is there any other battery wires i should check?


And for the cel yes i have one but it came up for my testpipe but im not sure if anyhting else. Can't make it outta my driveway. Damn 5 inches of snow!

 

if your ELD is bad it will throw code. it my not be the problem but its something that you can eliminate. I kinda had the same problem as you. And my eld was bad i had to get a whole new fusebox.

 

Where did you get the replacement alternator from and what type of alternator did you buy?

 

Dang how much did the whole fuse box cost? Hoepfully its that or something smaller. What exactly happened to your car?

And i got my alternator from Dick's auto. its a local shop here and they ordered it.

What brand? Remanufactured or new?

I've seen a lot of poorly remanufactured alternators with problems straight out of the box.

Your alternator should be charging the battery a bit over 14v. 14.2-14.4v is normal; less than that indicates a problem. The battery should show a little over 12v when the engine is not running.

Does the charging light in the dash flicker or come on solid while the car is running?

 

my car charges at 13.4 volts aleast thats what the Vafc says. i paid 75 bucks for a new fuse from a local honda salvage yard. if you need one i got a extra one i picked up at a u pull it place. if you find out its your ELD let me know if you need one.

 

the alternator was ordered new but it came with a lifetime warrenty so hopefully its that. The battert is at 13 when off and the alternator still shows 13 , 13.1. As for the charge light there is none! so im guessing its that. Do you know the prblem with that

And if i new a new fuse box i'll get PM you or something.

It sounds as if the car is running off the battery until it drains and the alternator is not charging; however, if there is no charging light and the voltages are in spec then it sounds like your alternator is okay. All I can say is that you may have a short, a bad ground, bad connection, or a bad component somewhere that is draining the electricity, but that's just too general to help. You'd have to probe around the car to investigate further.

If you're stumped at this point, you may want to take the car to a specialist in automotive electrical systems and pay to have it checked out.

What did you do to the car prior to this problem occurring?
