96 JDM ITR engines. If the head is stamped 95, is it still a type r motor?

Default 96 JDM ITR engines. If the head is stamped 95, is it still a type r motor?

I just checked the head on my type r motor, and its stamped 95. Does this mean my motor is not a type r? Its also stamped PR3-2. I also see the green paint near the distributor, as well as a 30 stamped nearby as well. The IM is definitely a type r manifold. My block is stamped B18C. Just wante to make sure the motor is definitely a type R. Any insight?

Type-R's were first available in August 1995

and there's nothing to say they weren't using head castings on cars from the year 1996 that were manufactured in 1995

It was manufactured in 1995, but used on 1996 model just how tartje mentioned it.

Right. My concern was just that I wanted to make sure that my motor was a type r. It definitely doesn't feel like a GSR but you can never be too sure. The 95 stamping threw me off.

It's a ITR don't worry. That green stamp says it all.

IDK but my USDM B16A2 head had green on it. AFAIK the green doesn't mean anything, and is easily duplicated.

Stamped PR3-2 on the head? Where is the green paint on your head? I remember there was a thread where they indicated how to distinguish the characteristics of a type r head, and mine fit it all, but when I saw the head stamped 95, it brought up my attention.

Oh I forgot to look for the Pr3-2 but it does have the 30 in it and had the green paint. I am 100% positive it came from a USDM B16A2. Honestly there is little difference between the two I wouldnt sweat it. Identify the cams and valvesprings by color(springs) and rings(cams). If you have the motor out of the car you can look into the intake ports and see the ITR valves vs the STD Vtec valves.

So you definatly have a B16/ITR head chances are its not a GSR motor with a B16 head.

Yeah I highly doubt its a GSR motor with a B16 head. I really think its a type r motor. Its very strong....much faster than a GSR motor.

green paint = itr head. If your b16 has green paint near the dizzy, might want to double check what internals the head has, it might be itr.

23k posts and you have problems reading still? I was positive it was a B16 head. It was pulled from an 00 Si my buddie was the original owner of. 00 head date PR3-4

Ah....PR3-4. So that's definitely a B16 head? I know PR3-2 qualifies my head as an ITR. Why does honda have to make it so confusing? lol

the stamps on the head WON'T let you identify whether it has come from a Spec-R engine or not

I'm not saying thats the only deciding factor. I know there are other characteristics.

Keep in mind, any '08 model available now would have been produced in '07 - so stamps are usually for the year before the model year

Characteristics of an R/B16 head.
Green paint
Stamped PR3-x or PR4-x

There is no SET PR3/PR4 stamp that guarantees it to be an ITR head.
So believing that a PR3-2 stamp will be an ITR head is completely incorrect.

You can't really tell the difference unless you rip it open and look at the valve springs like Natural Aspirations stated. Looking at the intake side IMO, but with carbon build up and doing that just to check the head it's a bit of a bitch. In most cases the, if it's a PR3/PR4 head mated to a B18C/C5 block. It's an R head, and I wouldn't be too worried.
