Default R.I.P. 240 :-(

ahhh its a goner, hate to see it leave but i all i had was bad luck recently... first antenna broke, then my lip broke off, then had a flat tire, and now the whole car.. hmm whats next? anyways.. need to ask one question, when the car is totalled does the insurance company pay out the "retail value of the vehicle" based on its mileage, and zip code where you live. I.E. just like you would find in Kelly Blue Book. I was told this is how its done since this happened to my friend before, but had never had anything remotly close to this happen to me until now.

Luckily i got out alive without a single scratch, little bruise on the arm from the airbag when it deployed but other than that i was totally fine. From now on i'm going to start wearing a seatbelt.. i got a bad habbit of not wearing one and this time thankfully i lived it could have been worse. Basically what happened is i flew off I-405 Southbound, on Western exhit down into the bushes and hit a tree headon that basically brought the car to a stop from about 80mph.

I'd greatly appreciate if anyone had any experience with a total collision and what how does the insurance company handle a total loss? Just so they dont try to cheat me out of my money to help themselves.

Thanks all

It all depends on the insurance company. Most will pay retail.

80 mph, no seat belt, .... stopped by a tree.
you are EXTREMELY lucky.

most people die or sustain life threatening injuries getting stopped at 80 mph with only an airbag.

glad your still amongst the living (get some x-rays done ASAP)

They will pay you "fair-market value" for the car...i.e. what the cars are selling for in your area.

Its a name brand "Insurance Company" if you will, i do not want to disclose their name but they are a huge company probably everyone had heard of them. My friend was insured through them and his car was barely totalled, practically border line and their paid full retail for it. Mine was in immaculate condition, 50K miles, flawless condition up until the crash of course

How it happened, well i havent been sleeping much lately, mistake one, i.e. go to sleep at 3:30 and work at 6:30am not every healthy, was going through my mail on the fwy in the center lane, saw the exit in the last minute since i was busy reading mail , decided to go for it, bad idea , made it into lane 4 behind an SUV, couldnt see the traffic flow on the offramp, cut into the exit lane last minute, once i cleared the SUV and was able to see whats happeneing on the onramp it was too late. 20 cars stopped bumper to bumper and i had about 20 maybe 30 meters to stop my vehicle so that wasnt going to happen. Btw, i was going with the flow of the traffic about 65mph before i started the lane change, the speed increased a bit basically to make it to that ramp.

Anyways, i slammed on the brakes that locked up car skidded, so it was either me hitting a car in front of me, probably totalling it then doing a domino effect on 10 others in front of him or me off the fwy solo taking my own chances so i did that. Thanks GOD i didnt get killed, hit anyone else, or damaged any city property. Tree did not sustain any damage and it was just my own proprety damage. Didnt get a ticket, and this will be handled through an insurance company as a single colision with an unmoving object. CHP didnt really care too much beacuse nobody got hurt and no other parties were involved. They were very helpful as this pretty much would have happened to anyone that would had tried to do this idiotic mistake. Lesson learned do not go for the exit if its too late.. its better to wait and turn out on the next one. All in all.. i'm ok and thats all it maters, its only a car. Now maybe i come back to my Honda family again

Besides the safety issue, I'd also be concerned about getting a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt in SOCal...

They go threw a company that has records of all car listing in your area so the more consistant over priced adds for your car the higher they will pay you. What ever you do dont take there first offer. My friend works in claims and she said they always give a low offer first. 2nd or 3rd offer is ok. after that they ask you to get the car apraised. Even if the car is not in good condition tell them it was tell them that the car was serviced by yourself and just replaced a bunch of stuff. even helps if you can find ads of the same car even though its not in your area.

Just about.. naw j.k.. i was near mills though i could see the exit when i got out.. i think the actual impact was less then 80mph.. the grass and the moist dirt that my car slowly sunk into once i was off the pavment slowed my down a lot plus I'M SO GLAD i was in a 240.. its like fortress comparing to honda's. Its a very heavy, sturdy pretty large sized car considering its a 2 seater. I have a feeling if i was in my teg, hatch or anything smaller it would have been fatal no doubt.

Again, thanks for all the replies, and hope you guys can help me out with some info on the insurance dealio.. as to what the proper procedure is that insurance companies usualy take. I know they are always out there to protect their own *** to their own benefit to avoid paying out but i think i should be treated equally for once and not always be dicked around. I'm not even going to claim medical injuries like many others do. I just want my car paid off so i can move on with my life and get back on the track..

Mogwai, take care of my baby... keep the 484 as long as you can.. clean ones are hard to find these days..

I told the CHP i had my seatbelt because i knew i would get a ticket if i said i didnt wear one.. the ambulance dood was about to check out my chest for bruises.. i was like calm down.. its ok.. i feel no pain.. i feel good, go away now. I signed a waiver and avoided an ambulance ride that would cost an arm and a leg.. so i will go in my own personal time to lessen the costs. But honestly i feel freaking great like nothing happend, i'm really glad that nothing happened to me.

All i want is a to be fairly treated when my car is appraised and get this thing over with.. its enough of a headache to go find another one.. too bad for my HID's and my Greddy exhaust.. i'm not getting a penny for those and they are literally gone.. the HID bulb and ballast disintegrated.
