i searched for this topic. but my question is what exactly is the difference between california laws on roll bars, weight reduction, air bag trays/delete, ride height, smog regulations/laws. also what problems (for ppl in California) have you run into with the law/cops..

Isn't it a Federal law that if a vehicle came standard with Airbags than it is Illegal to remove them without just cause, regardless of the state?

That's what I thought because I've always wanted to get a steering wheel but didn't want to deal with that

Dont be skurred.

But just recently I had a friend get into a traffic accident. He had removed his bags and he was given a HUGE fine just for not having the bags deploy. When he tried to argue it, the cop told him that since the bags did not deploy he assumed they had been removed but the driver could prove him other wrong in court.

I had a friend come across this one, it is illegal to pull out a perfectly good airbag, but if it's ever been deployed (and you can prove it) then you have the choice to put it back in or not.

as for rolbars...... i've had a few cars with roll bars and never been hassled. but i'm going to assume that they are illegal to have on the streets if you don't have a harness then they look at it as more of a hazzard since you might hit your head on the bar,

im from long beach, CA and over here they do bust u for some dumb things basically because of all the ricers around here. but my friend use to have a EF with full roll cage, gutted and somewhat built LSV.

ride height regulation is that ur headlight has to be 22 inch or more off the ground, if its lower than that then expect a ticket.

but bars and everything else is fine, you cant run strait pipes... have to have cat back and no yellow headlights... thats about it. sometimes they pull me over just to mess with me but ive only gotten a ticket for my intake, everything else is fine.

my DC is gutted with rear strut/ pillar bar/miracle X

Airbags can be removed if they are faulty or obviously gone off. At least what I thought? Now not sure if your required to replace with an oem part or if any wheel will work.

idont see why you would get a ticket for no airbags., because i mean in newer cars you have the option to TURN OFF your airbag.

i have a detachable wheel and havnt gotten hassled for it... yet?

a lot of newer cars have a keyhole in the glovebox or somewhere that lets you switch off the passenger airbag, for baby seats

i didn't know you could do it with the drivers one too....

it was either $50 or $75. pretty much the same as having no front plate here in MD. not bad i guess. but the principle of it was just a shitty situation lol.

They can give you tickets for rollbars, spoilers or other objects under "obstruction of view". Basically almost everything is illegal here in **** california.

As the other member mentioned, you cannot be lower than 22 inches off the ground from the middle of your headlight or your wheel cannot be higher than the frame of the car.

straight pipes carry a $3000 fine. Other illegal engine mods are subject to the state referee and those tickets usually run $350-700 and go up each time you get it.

Engine mods need to be carb approved with applicable carb eo# attached and clearly visible. It also has to be for the specified model and vehicle year. Exhaust cannot be louder than 92db, if you get pulled over, you have the right to get it tested at an authorized station and you will get a certificate if it passes.

Yeah i been told by the ref that having an aftermarket steering wheel is not illegal.
Also with roll cages/roll bars. Also not illegal if its not in your way of vision.
