True dat.
The ECT needs to be functioning properly (your engine has to be warmed up) for VTEC to engage.
Change out the sensor, it's towards the front of the block, under the dizzy (tho above the transmission) on a B series...then again you really haven't told us anything about your car....so I can't help you any further than that...

we changed the tempeture sensor and it stayed on and it has been backfiring that could mean its running rich right? there is no oxygen sensors on it could that be a problem?

is it a p28 or what??? chipped?? we need some more info... and you will need a 02 sensor before anything starts to work right.

dont mean to thread jack but i dont want to make another useless post. My best bud picked up an EG hatch with a usdm gsr swap. Vtec is at about 6000-6200 its pretty high so it falls out of vtec, at 75 on the highway its in the high 3k's so im thinking its most likely an LS tranny. What could cause vtec to kick in so late? oil pressure is fine, no cels, coolant temp is fine. I told him the ecu tells it when to activate so it might have been chipped/modified. What you guys think?
yeah its just got a skunk 2 i/m, itr cams, dc header, thermal research & d exhaust. Not sure if its chipped/tuned the vtec is just pretty high 6000-6200. Im going to open up the case this weekend see if its socketed or not. Its got a B&M pressure regulator and guage which is kinda weird cuz there isnt a need to change fuel pressure at idle it sits at 45psi~ i think stock is 43.5 psi? Might have had a nitrous kit on it in the past who knows. Trying to convince him to throw a 50/75 wet shot on it. Should put him at 205+wp with a 50 and with a 75 shot like 235whp+ or so depending on how the motor responds

You might have your VTEC solenoid plug and your CTS plug switched. Try switching them around. Unplug the battery to clear the ECU code. Turn it on and see if the light is still on. It's a very common mixup. The plugs are the same and in a nearby location.
Green plug goes to VTEC. Gray/black/dark plug goes to CTS.
